Peeta’s plan is that they will split up to go book hunting, and meet at a secluded windowsill on the second floor to compare their finds in half an hour, but they do a bad job of splitting up. They keep crossing paths as they explore the rows, catching sight of each other through the books and smiling at each other like they’re in some film.

At last, it’s just the three of them, Katniss, Peeta, and Calla, in Katniss’s childhood bed. Calla sleeps, swaddled peacefully in her mother’s arms. Peeta leans his head against his girlfriend’s, caressing their daughter’s face. 

Katniss is able to think clearly for the first time since giving birth, but nothing seems to really matter beyond the haven of warm lamplight that bathes the bed and its three occupants. It feels impossible that just this morning she’d woken up cramping. She was a different person then. She’s a mother. Calla is here — a real, brand new person she and Peeta made. 

Katniss hums to herself, smiling. “What?” Peeta asks. 

“To think this all started with some leftover lasagna and a stupid poster.”

okay first of all, it feels odd to be on the receiving end of Library Lark content since they're a creation of yours I fell absolutely in love with and can't help but think of them any time I see gorgeous library / bookstore settings, so I'm honored you're sharing this with me 🥰

second of all, I absolutely adore!!! like look at those blossoms they brought in, it just livens up the space even more. spring has sprung 😍🌸🤩 and how fitting would it be for our favorite duo to visit during their season??

The Everdeen family comes outside to help bring all the baby supplies into the house. Mr. Everdeen doesn’t say much, and Peeta doesn’t stay very long, kissing Katniss goodbye and telling her he’ll pick her up for work in the morning. Up in Katniss’s room, Prim coos over all the tiny socks, and Mrs. Everdeen comments on how much she likes the brand of carrier they were given. Katniss sits on her bed, rubbing her bump and watching them, but her mind is distracted by the rift between her father and her baby’s. Leaving her mother and sister to sort through the presents, she meanders slowly to the kitchen, makes herself some tea, and takes it to the back porch swing. 

With only two months until the baby arrives, Katniss and Peeta get some unexpected gifts.

Katniss Everdeen is getting settled in her new job as a specialist at Seamtown Local Library, spending her days surrounded by books (which she loves), dealing with patrons (which she does not love), trying to impress her supervisor Annie (who is great), and making new friends with her colleagues ... especially one Peeta Mellark (who ... well, only time will tell how she feels about him).

A romp among the shelves, full of fluff and fun, and more than just the books being "checked out." Based on a concept by myself and @captainseaweedbrains ♥️

“Uh-oh,” Cary laughs sweetly. “So serious. Don’t tell me you’re pregnant.” Her husband laughs with her, but neither Katniss nor Peeta can muster even a snort to save face. Cary’s smile falls abruptly, like paint sloughed off a canvas with a pallet knife. “Katniss,” she says, all levity gone, “tell us you’re not pregnant.”

Knowing the clock is ticking, Katniss and Peeta finally break the news to her mother and father — and face the consequences.

You can thank @captainseaweedbrains for the speed with which this chapter was released: she and I actually wrote most of it months ago, in a back and forth chat! The next chapter might take a little more time, but it’ll be worth the wait!
