There's something about villain love that just Hits when it's done right. Like that is an irredeemable character, and the love they give is so true, and that does not cancel out the first fact. Something about love as a morally neutral feeling/action just hits right.

Help, I Need YuuriVoice "Props"

I'm trying to make a list of objects across YuuriVoice lore that have notable significance for plot or character reasons to use as a specific class of Magic Items in my Pieces of Eight AU, which is a fantasy setting with a heavy emphasis on sea creatures and nautical/piracy elements.

If it comes down to it, I can use items that are important to my listener OCs in the base story or come up with new items that fit the characters/settings of this AU, but I really like leaning into the Fanfiction of it all and linking things as much to the original narrative as I can.

Does anyone have some suggestions? List of what I have so far below the cut (including rejections and why, so if you can find a context that would make a rejection work I am all ears!)

Defining the Pieces of Eight:

When the apex predator of the seas, Finn the Kraken, cuts off one of his tentacles, the intent and magic within that part of him forms into a sort of treasure. They're more often weapons or tools as this Finn's intentions tend to be practical, but he's castrated some sentimentality over the centuries as well. The amount of magic each Piece has is unrelated to the others, and when the magic that one has is gone it will lose its abilities. Some items may still serve a purpose without magic (eg: a key may no longer unlock any door, but if a lock has the same shape it's still a key). They're called Pieces of Eight because they are made from one of the eight tentacles; there are more than eight of them in this world, especially when you take into account ones that have lost their magic. Whatever ritual the plot demands requires eight pieces, but not specific ones.

Potential "Pieces of Eight" Objects

The gun Auron killed his father with - an ornate pistol that cannot miss, but it also can't be reloaded. Additionally, it fires with a loud sound that demands the attention of the surroundings and cannot be used to kill discreetly. It has been an heirloom and was handed down to Auron when his inheritance of the family title was announced. The magic will be depleted by the end of Bloody Seafoam (Auron x Monroe story)

The pen Rook gave Auron/ Auron's sword in Evalas - is the pen mightier than the sword? I'm unsure of the magic but I do think Monroe will somehow give it to him here too, probably as the plots convene into a single shared narrative.

Betty, Seth's knife that belonged to his mother - a flawless knife that slides in and out of flesh like it's warm butter. Impossible to trace back to its user through magical means. It was something she plundered and left Seth with when she left for the seas once more. May be lost during the course of Saltwater Taffy (Seth x Alphonse x Tana story) and need to be found again.

Casper's mix tape (CD) - reimagined as a music box to be setting appropriate. A small ornament shaped like a clam that can hold a couple small trinkets. When two people each store a token in the box, it will play music only when they are thinking of each other simultaneously, no matter the distance.

Finneas - I think it would be a fun subversion of the canon to have Finneas the Mage as the offshoot from the Withered Finn vibes kraken. He fits the technical definition of a Piece of Eight, but as a living person he may have some different rules. I'm using some PotC for inspo for the ritual that the Pieces of Eight will be used for, so maybe he's more like a Vessel/9th piece

Alphonse's hair dye? - might be a stretch, but with his mental state being tied to his Bubblegum Prince status or lack thereof I could see an accessory with glamour magic that has an impact on his psyche as a payoff.

Rejected "Pieces of Eight" Objects

Mirrors - I think that with how Finneas uses mirrors in The Beyond, having some kind of mirror that's used to hunt down Pieces of Eight makes sense. Maybe a hand mirror that can see the immediately surrounding area and they need to find and use the context clues.

Deep Dish the Raccoon - I don't really have anything besides the potential for a sentient Piece other than Finneas, as I want to avoid too much in the way of Chosen One vibes and showing an example of another living creature (even if not another Finn... probably? The DD lore is still a mystery tbh) could make Finneas's existence slightly more commonplace for the setting.

Faust's cape - not all magic items are Pieces of Eight, and the night sky that adorns Faust is among that number. Not 100% sure of how I'll handle it, as the Tailor's Apprentice narrative doesn't have a lot for me to pull from yet for parallels and I'm not sure if/where Star fits into the Evalas plot, as Faust and Finn feel perfectly situated to have listeners that aren't "destined" in the same way with new lives together. If it turns out that Star is supposed to be The Apprentice dreaming, Vega's the child of an entrapped selkie and was born without a coat, so I could do something there where she has to make one and borrows the magic of Faust and Finneas to enhance their selkie magic.

Sugarboo's cinnamon roll - idk I don't think a pastry really works for this. I could maybe do something with the cinnamon, as spice demands played a role in the age of piracy?

The bouquet Finn made for Sunflower - similar to Faust's cape, this will be something magical but not related to the Pieces of Eight. With Eden being a dryad, it will probably be something related to getting their powers or memory back. Maybe both.

The letter breaking the truce with the werewolves - while Ulrick will be in here along with Jay (as Bird mostly) and I think that something to act as a contract could exist between him and Finn (he's a former shark siren turned pirate captain) that could stand as a comparable symbol of the breaking of peace and loss of his pod, but Finn wouldn't have torn off a tentacle for that

Vehicles & Buildings - Seth's bike, Alphonse's shop, the Sword and Board, and things like that aren't going to be imported made from Kraken sushi

Remembering a romfan comic I read with a body-swapping plot, and in the obligatory "look at the babies the happy couple had" bonus story Dad went "Ok babe, when your water breaks you are going to TAG ME THE FUCK IN!" and then yeah, he was the one in the driver's seat during the entire labor. Iconic behavior.

ok but like… can you imagine during that first full moon, doll and wolfy just hanging out in the basement and then admitting that they wanna be a teacher? like, for middle schoolers?

and maybe they’re still looking for teaching jobs, but they got yoinked into the pack dynamic in the midst of that, throwing a wrench in their plans.

Oooh, I really like this! While I could definitely see how the whole "congratulations, you're an official pack member" thing gets in the way of getting a new job, I like to think that Doll could learn some people management skills that will help when they're able to get that teaching job they want.

A Kintsugi Beehive

A hive made of comb torn away from previously made hives. The honey used to hold these fragments together hardens into a sparkling amber-like material, interior crystalizations sparkling in the light like golden flecks.

The thing about Pieces of Eight is that it's not some pirate mysticism, it's just Spanish currency stuff of the time. I still am heavily considering using it for some kind of magic in my YuuriVoice Siren AU related to Finn, as he's a cecaelia (octopus mermaid) meaning that 8 "pieces" in relation to his tentacles could have some notable correlation, esp with me establishing that he's removed tentacles that grow too independent, and that's going to lead into them becoming things (or people), so having the love stories convene in a story of finding the eight treasures that still have remnants of Finn's magic? Could be a good plot bunny.
