College car-building competitions are commonplace, usually highlighting student-built electric, hybrid and solar-powered vehicles. A recent challenge, however, tests vehicles the students build and power all by themselves.
The Human Powered Vehicle Challenge, led by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and now in its 28th year, pits human-powered vehicles from colleges across the US and from international entrants against each other, without the benefit of gas, electric motors, batteries or solar cells. This year, the competition took place last week at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway sponsored by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and will continue next week at Montana State University, Bozeman.
“The big goal is to provide a design experience for engineering students where they can actually build, test and compete against some of their peers from other schools, putting what they’re learning to work,” said race chair Dr. Mark Archibald. “An emerging goal has also been to emphasize sustainable transportation.”
The 34 vehicles at Indianapolis competed in two classes — among vehicles built for utility and those built solely for speed — and were judged by top speed, endurance, ability to traverse an obstacle course and overall design. All cars must be tested by multiple riders, both male and female, to ensure that it’s the car, not the rider, who is being judged.
Last weekend, the overall winner in the utility class was Vortex, a recumbent vehicle from the University of Toronto while a racer from Olin College named Shadowfax won the speed class with a top speed of 34 mph.
We know what you’re thinking: How are these pedal-powered contraptions any different from bikes? For one, they’re protected from the weather and often come with safety features and creature comforts.
“A lot of them will have safety systems,” Archibald said. “They’re required to have rollover protection and harnesses, so there’s an added element of safety. The utilitraion vehicles often come with full lights, turn signals, things you don’t see on an ordinary bicycle.”
Through the years, Archibald said he’s even seen some vehicles that eschew traditional pedal propulsion, such as hydraulic systems that store energy and linear drivetrains that have riders moving their feet up and down, though none of these have done well in the competition.
Though human powered vehicles won’t be hitting highways anytime soon, Archibald is optimistic that they will catch on as alternatives to fueled vehicles. “Some of these would be very practical on the road,” he said. “Many of them are vehicles that could be used as alternaitve transportation.” In fact, a few years back one team even pedaled their car from Milwaukee to the compeition when it was in Madison, Wisc. to prove that it was road-worthy.
