Just realized that today marked the final payment for my car note. Although my little Scion Xa was used and purchased for only $8900, it's the first large purchase I got my own financing for--the first large purchase I researched, sought, and paid off all on my own. No one ever donated a single cent to it. It was all me. Every single payment on time (direct debit all the way!), and now I've officially paid it off. I hope I can one day say this about my grad school student loans, and a future house, but I'm kind of excited to use the extra $157.24 in my bank account toward other things. Being the practical person I am, these "other" things consist of tires, credit cards (I get scared of having a total credit debt above $2500), saving for a new laptop, etc., because I'm always worried about saving for a rainy day, and I work for a nonprofit that's only closed three days a year. I'm attempting to learn to accept that I'll never be able to afford fancy, expensive things (I dream about walking into a store and just buying a sofa, or a solid oak floor to ceiling wall-sized bookcase, or a new bed complete with box spring, frame, and pillowtop mattress--better yet, a bed that moves or has numbers), or be able to take a two-week vacation. True, my payment wasn't very big compared to things like my student loans and rent (which is all me as well), and my car wasn't very expensive to begin with, but I live where a vehicle is a necessity, and without my efficient little automobile, there's no way I would have been able to work where I work, especially with the peanuts I'm paid. But, anyway, yay to being done with the car and hooray for the extra money! That's $1415.16 I get to keep this year.
