I wish to become one of the following: a stand-up comic, a pirate, the love of someone's life, a wizard, an international spy or ninja, Lara Croft (minus the humongozoid boobs), or the frontperson of a band. Currently, I'm working to pay off a huge amount of debt due to a little thing I call "Satan's Shenanagins," but conventional theory would simply label it as "Grad School." My expertise lies in thinking way too much, laughing, being celibate, acting like a nutter, and saying things that tend to elicit one of two responses: "You're so funny!" or "Whattha?!! Huh?!" Basically, I'm awesome at anything that ultimately results in my feeling alienated from the human race (C.F., an inferiority complex). As with the grand tradition of obnoxious personal blogs, I too am offering you a taste of my bad poetry, prose, and other random snippets. Hooray! Ask me stuff!

My 4-year old nephew has just discovered "The Pirates of the Caribbean" on Netflix. After the movie, and while I searched our DVDs for the second film, he made a sword, yelled "yo, ho, ho," and ran around the house proclaiming he is a pirate and now wants a Captain Jack Sparrow-themed birthday party in September. Just in case that is the case, I've been researching how best to make him into Cap'n Jack, and where we would have such a party. (PS. Orlando Bloom's face in the second picture kills me)

His new fascination is Star Wars, and although he doesn't completely understand "light" and "dark" side, he does know good guys vs. bad guys. He chose the Dark Side, and loves Darth Vader and Storm Troopers, and the only reason he can give when asked why is, "because he's/they're cool." This is the only shirt we could find that is all about the Dark Side, but totally appropriate for a 4 year old to wear, especially to his preschool. If the people there only knew...

Today

Today is the first day of my new year. I woke up 37 years old.

Sitting alone in my room listening to Explosions in the Sky. "The Only Moment We Were Alone" is one of those songs that is always cathartic for me. With all the stress surrounding me lately, this song really allows me a moment to give in and process the chaos.

I went to the doctor about two weeks ago to talk to him about my nausea, headaches, acne, and he told me that it's stress, that work is killing me right now. I would give anything to walk out and tell my boss to screw herself. I don't feel myself because of my job, but I need the money to pay my student loans and insurance. I hate being beholden to something that makes me miserable for reasons that feel like an obligation.

Another birthday has passed. Now we have a year until he turns five. We're already taking bets on what next year's party will be... 2012 was a superhero party 2013 was macaroni and cheese 2014 was airplanes And this year, it was Big Hero 6.

1. Happy Birthday, Little Boy! Although his actual birthday was September 8, today we celebrated his annual themed party for his fourth birthday. Earlier this year, he fell in love with the movie “Big Hero 6.” Every year we do a themed party, and for 2015, the motif was Big Hero 6/San Fransokyo. For several months I tried to figure out how to do this type of party, as my parents don’t want to have a party in their home, where they’d end up having to cook and clean up after 30-40 people, so we always do it somewhere fun or unique. About two months ago, I realized we could do this kind of thing at a Japanese restaurant!

2. The Invitation

A series of photos taken from a Spring trip to Disney World provided a basis for the invitation. We stood in line for 45 minutes toward the end of the cast members’ day to get this picture, and the Little Boy was stoked to meet Hiro and fist bump Baymax. He wore his BH6 shirt, and had themed decals from MyFantasyBands.com on his Magic Band. The cast member playing Hiro loved the decals, and wanted to show the other cast members in his section.

I had a hard time finding the Big Hero 6 font, especially one that would install on my computer. After several failed attempts to get it to work, I decided to just go for something reminiscent of the font, and the logo. We decided to do something like “[Our] Big Hero [is turning] 4.”

Despite living in the digital age, we always make and send invitations using photos we take ourselves. I am NOT a graphic designer, and don’t know how to utilize photoshop. To create what I had in mind, I just made an image on Microsoft Publisher at work, using one of the pictures I took when he met Baymax in May, and then I saved it as a .png file. I then uploaded that to Zazzle.com, and made a postcard. The front looks exactly like the last image above, and the back looked like a postcard, with the left side having a map of the restaurant’s location, as well as the address again. The right side was blank for a postage stamp and recipient’s address. Zazzle had a special on all purchases at the time I did this, and we have Zazzle Black for free shipping. I ordered 40 invitations, and then we just had to wait for the package to arrive. In the meantime, my mom and I texted the .png file to people so they would know about the party ahead of the physical invitation.

3. The Venue

We chose a Japanese restaurant, and just used google to draw up a list of places in the area. We had a day and time already in mind, so visited each place to figure out what they could do for us. The first place we visited ended up being our choice–they could do it on the 19th of September, gave us the entire second floor, no deposit, and 25% off the food. The manager had Filipino in-laws, so he wanted to make the party happen for my mom.

Our food ended up being four types of sushi, including California Rolls, Rock n Rolls, Shaggy Dogs, and something else I don’t remember, vegetable fried rice, Yaki Udon noodles, beef kabobs, and chicken yakitori.

4. The Celebratory Shirts

Every year, whatever the birthday theme, those of us closest to my nephew wear shirts that I order, have made, etc., that I think are a bit like our personalities. The Little Guy wore the shirt he originally had on when he met Hiro and Baymax--he had a different shirt on for the party, but got toothpaste all over it before we left for the restaurant.

My shirt, I think, reveals that inside, I wish I were strong, brave and heroic. My dad’s shirt is blasting into the sky, because my dad is idealistic. My mom is a nurse, and she just plain loves Baymax. My aunt is a realistic, but creative thinker, so the design on her purple shirt is both cubist in design, but painted like water colors. My uncle is an engineer by profession, so his shirt is almost like design schematics for Baymax. My mom’s cousin has all of the characters on her shirt, because she is very family-oriented, and the character’s in the movie become a family as they aid Hiro in grieving the loss of his brother, the creator of Baymax.

There was a Labor Day sale on Threadless.com, so all of our shirts were $14.99 with free shipping. I was originally going to purchase shirts from Hot Topic, but those were upwards of $20-$26, so I lucked out with the Threadless sale.

5. Decorations

We used a bunch of stuff from thrift stores, things we already had, things we could use again, and his toys, as decorations.

My mom purchased eight white balloons, which we Sharpied with Baymax’s eyes, and I got a few things on Amazon for the main table. These things consisted of four paper pagodas, two solar-powered Lucky Fortune cats, a wooden bridge (to act as the Golden Gate Bridge), and a small cable car. I also bought a Little Golden Book version of the story, so people unfamiliar with the movie could quickly read and learn the plot. The rest of the stuff we used consisted of all of his Big Hero 6 toys, a guest book we’ve used since he turned one, a chalkboard I made from a damaged picture frame, and two of my red placemats. I also made some red paper cranes while watching TV after work.

We got some silver picture holders from two different thrift stores, each of which held 10 photos. I didn’t have time to order photos from PostalPix to use, and TRIED to print a few pictures at work yesterday with some photo paper I had on hand, but that was a failure. Luckily, a Walgreens near my parents house could print square photos, so I uploaded a few, and we picked them up on the way to the restaurant. Just in case, I packed my little paper cutter in the event that the square photos were printed on 4x6 paper–they were.

6. Entertainment

Since there would be quite a lot of us in a restaurant, mostly adults, we didn’t really do games. I just had a bunch of handouts out that consisted of drawing sheets, coloring pages, a word search, and I also had out some red paper and sheets that had instructions for making paper cranes.

We also had a package of white balloons left over from last year (which I found early this morning), which someone found, as well as our Sharpies, and three teenagers decided to blow them up, write all over them, and then play with them. Twice, they landed in the sushi prep area, and I’m sure the sushi chefs got ticked.
