Carcinology, from Ancient Greek καρκίνος (karkínos), meaning "crab", and λόγος (lógos), meaning "study", is a branch of zoology that consists of the study of crustaceans. Crustaceans are a large traditional subphylum of arthropods classified by having a hard exoskeleton made of chitin or chitin and calcium, three body regions, and jointed, paired appendages. Fun carcinology fact of the day! 30/08

To deter predators, Antarctic giant isopods will roll into a ball. Just like their cousins, the pill bugs, isopods will roll up into a tight ball when faced with a predator. Only when they're certain that the predator has moved on will they unroll.

Switched it up today. It's a special episode...! Based on a conversation I had with a friend over golisopod. Because we're nerds. Duh.

Dorothy Bliss

Dorothy Bliss was born in 1916 in Cranston, Rhode Island. Bliss was an accomplished researcher in the carcinology, the study of crustaceans. In 1956, she joined the American Museum of Natural History, and by 1968, she had become curator of invertebrates. Bliss became well-known in her field for editing the 10-volume series The Biology of Crustacea. During her career, she also served on the faculties of Albert Einstein Medical College, the City University of New York, and the University of Rhode Island. Bliss produced over 40 scientific papers and influenced countless younger crustacean researchers. In 1987, she received the Crustacean Society Excellence Award in Research.

Dorothy Bliss died in 1987 at the age of 71.
