I don't want to sound conceited, but all my life people have been telling me that I am a shoe-in to play Christine Daaé at some point. Whenever I see these people, I get so irrationally jealous. I don't want to be "that girl" who gets catty at the sign of competition. Any tips?
Well, I have many thoughts on this. I don’t want to sound mean, but I am going to be completely honest in my response.
There are no guarantees in anything. Broadway is...Incredibly difficult to achieve. And I say that, but I really can’t express how difficult it is. I could go on for pages and pages and pages on this subject, but I’ll try to condense. Being good has little to do with it--it hinges on luck, contacts, talent, hard work... There’s so much you can’t control, and I know people who are absolutely unbelievable theatre artists who will never ever be on Broadway. People who, by all rights, could blow many Broadway performers out of the water. But they will never get the chance, because Broadway is such an immensely difficult goal to achieve. And no matter how good they are, they just won’t be cast without a huge stroke of luck. I don’t say this to discourage you, but if you do decide to pursue this, you will quickly learn that there are no shoe-ins. I don’t care how much you would fit the role--there are thousands of girls who fit the role, and the few that get cast are not necessarily any better than any of the others. So... Again, not trying to be mean or discouraging but.... Broadway just doesn’t work like that.
You do not have that role, it is not your right, and there’s no reason somebody else can’t have the same goal. Thousands and thousands and thousands of girls dream of being that role, and they have ever right to want it, just like you.
Being humble is king. And not just humble on the outside--humble on the inside.
I truly don’t mean this to sound rude or discouraging, but these are lessons you will quickly learn in a much harsher way once you’re out in the industry. You want to work towards shedding this sense of entitlement, because it will not serve you in the professional industry.
