ICYMI: The character of Clairvius Narcisse in ZOMBI CHILD, currently streaming through our #CaribbeanFilmSeries partnership with BAM (see bio link) was a real life person who was zombified!  

As covered in Harvard Magazine in 1986, Narcisse was turned into a zombie  by his brother over a land dispute, using a mix of puffer fish neurotoxin and  poisonous cane toad secretions.  Although depicted slightly differently to tell the story of this dynamic film, in real life he returned to his village 18 years later after no longer being exposed to the poison that left him a zombie slave for many years.  

What a trip!  

Narcisse’ story was then depicted in the book “The Serpent & the Rainbow” which soon after would be turned into a cult classic of the same name by horror master Wes Craven. That film starred Bill Pullman (Independence Day), Cathy Tyson (Mona Lisa), Zakes Mokae (Cry Freedom, A Rage in Harlem), Paul Winfield (Sounder, “King”) in a very classic scene, and Brent Jennings (Boycott, Witness).

In ZOMBI CHILD, France’s history of colonialism and slavery in Haiti converge. In this drama, Melissa, an orphan of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, meets white French teen Fanny, and joins a secret sorority at her new exclusive Paris boarding school.  To join, Melissa reveals a family secret about her grandfather Clairvius - that he was forced to live as a zombi! Fanny, obsessed with Melissa, and lovesick for her Latin boyfriend, uses Melissa’s family origins to do the unthinkable.

Director Betrand Bonello paces between Clairvius’ harrowing zombification and Melissa’s grappling with generational pain, alongside Fanny, who believes her appropriation of Haitian culture, and as a result Black lives, are territory to be trampled with. It is not.

🗣Sunday March 17, @luminaltheater will be hosting a restrospective screening of two films made in Guyana in the '70s and '80s ... The Terror and the Time, and In The Sky's Wild Noise. The films were made by the Victor Jara Collective, a group of filmmakers inspired by the Chilean artist and activisit. These were the only two films made by the Collective. The films had not been screened publicly in over 20 years, until last year's Third Horizon Festival. Now, at the #CaribbeanFilmSeries Fest we are screening the films on #16mm prints. To celebrate being able to watch films on film, we will be hosting a Roti Brunch just prior to the screening. A modern exploration into the illicit underworld in Trinidad’s capital city Port-of-Spain

When Charlie (Muhammad Muwakil, of the reggae/spoken word group Freetown Collective) falls on hard times, he tries his best to not fall into a life of crime, but succumbs in order to survive.  Feeling an unexpected encounter with the prostitute Dinah (model Jamie-Lee Phillips) will turn his life around, it instead releases a ripple that affects others in and surrounding their forbidden, violent world.  Fighter’s tragic plot is narrated by prophetic street vagrant King Curtis (Lou Lyons, the other-half of Freetown Collective). 

Director Damian Marcano’s debut feature film dispels the archetypes of the beach-laden, Carnival-minded landscape most think they know with his gritty perspective on the violence that pervades the city. Circumstances affect the characters choices; leading to triumph and tragedy. 

Boasting a 100% Trinidadian cast, Fighter has been shown to sold out audiences in Trinidad, Rotterdam, and New York City, and finally makes its premiere in Brooklyn - the largest enclave of Caribbean immigrants and first-generation Caribbean-Americans outside of the West Indies.
