Today is my grandparents' 53rd wedding anniversary. This morning we got to talking after breakfast and grandma reminded me of a story she tells often enough, but only now at this age I'm wise enough to listen with the intention of remembering. (Also, grandaddy's 78th birthday was yestersay) Within a few days of the wedding my grandfather was commissioned to work on Ascension Island as a construction worker, building the first electrical plant on the island. She says if they got married the Saturday, grandaddy had to leave the Tuesday. So my grandmother was left with three children all under the age of 10 (including a 5 month old) to take care of by herself while my grandfather was away doing what he had to at the time to make a living. Bear in mind Barbados was still a colony as well. No cell phones, no internet, no email. A whole year. Somehow they survived. And it certainly wasn't the easiest choice or easiest path but they survived. My grandmother remembers being at the airport to see my grandfather off with the other workers, and a distraught wife from St. Andrew ran on to the tarmac screaming "BRING BACK MY HUSBAND!" Running after the plane as it took off and had to be restrained. 😭 Grandaddy said the flight over Brazil was so long he thought the plane would never land. A WHOLE DAMN YEAR MY GUY! Their marriage is by no means perfect and sometimes these two are the epitome of "bicker like an old married couple". But if it weren't for them, and the choices they made, for better or worse, sickness and health, rich or poor, there wouldn't be a me.
