Carleton should join the NCAA?
This column tries to make the argument. My colleague, CIS Blog creator Neate Sager, has a response, which I have pasted below. I doubt the columnist even cared to look at this the way Neate did. Kudos, Sager!
______
Just once may Mr. Gray (who's copied on this) be responsible and explain the following?
1) You cannot join the NCAA in one sport only.
It has rules that you have to run a certain number of sports. Good luck to the Old Crows trying to generate interest in a football program that would have to play NCAA schools no one's ever heard of; good luck to Carleton running a D1 hockey team that can't recruit CHL players and has to fund 18 full scholarships on attendance of 900-1,000 fans per game.
2) Why would Mr. Smart or any coach in her/his right mind give up the training opportunities in CIS?
NCAA forbids coaches holding off-season practices (in fact, I wrote about this: http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/eh-game/carleton-ravens-dominance-ties-crying-reform-cis-basketball-223423989.html) It would also frown on a coach (and many in CIS do this) running a club system for high school aged athletes. Also, you only get a player for 4 seasons, not that crucial fifth year which has helped a lot of Ravens raise their game to a new level and get opportunities to play pro overseas. How formidable would Carleton be without fifth-year players, particularly this season's team or the 2009 edition (both had 3).
3) About those wins vs. NCAA teams.
They did beat Saint Louis, a NCAA tournament team, in preseason and that's great. Bet Rick Majerus, the Saint Louis coach, wishes he could have taken Phil Scrubb home with him. Keep in mind, though, those Aug.-Sept. games are against NCAA teams who just started practising. They play those trips just so they can start preseason practice early. Carleton would be the first to acknowledge that their record vs. D1 teams is not the same when they go on the road in October/November. For instance, Carleton lost to Harvard in November. The Crimson are a 10 seed in the tournament. Why is that not mentioned?
It was a 2-point game, so that small sample does indicate Carleton could be competitive with mid-major teams ... but only with all the advantages they have now. Key point that Ken Gray once again fails to explain to readers.
I get that he's proud of Carleton basketball. So am I, and I didn't even go there! At the same time, a columnist's job is to increase understanding of a subject and this ill-informed cheerleading fails on that count. Do we need changes in CIS basketball? Absolutely? More incentive for good players to stay home and more competition between the universities which are committed to providing a quality team. But enough about this NCAA fantasy, please. Let's work for a real solution.
Best,
