God lives, and He does not live less though you have injustice and adversity and pain and unkindness and violence and betrayal. God is in His heaven. We chose to come to an unjust world and suffer. But God is God, and He loves us. His Son died for us. There is for each of us, because of who we are and who He is and who we are together, hope. There is hope.

What did the Savior see so clearly in children that we sometimes lose sight of? Perhaps he was less distracted by their misbehavior and more in touch with who they really were: angels come from the presence of God to test themselves against the often cruel challenges of earth life. Perhaps he remembered them as fellow members of the royal household of heaven, who not long since had walked and talked with him in the cool of his Father's and Mother's celestial gardens. Perhaps he foresaw and felt compassion for the pains and disappointments and mistakes that would all too soon rob them of their innocence. Perhaps he rejoiced in a divine awareness that his own sacrifice would open the door for each of them to find their way back home again. Whatever it was that he saw so plainly, and we so dimly, it persuaded him to bless and honor the children rather than correcting or chastising them.

A person, who, in a single generation, changes the entire course of a lineage. The changes might be for good or ill, but the most noteworthy examples are those individuals who grow up in an abusive, emotionally destructive environment and who somehow find a way to metabolize the poison and refuse to pass it on to their children. They break the mold. They refute the observation that abused children become abusive parents, that the children of alcoholics become alcoholic adults, that ‘the sins of the fathers are visited upon the heads of children to the third and fourth generation.’ Their contribution to humanity is to filter the destructiveness out of their own lineage so that the generations downstream will have a supportive foundation upon which to build productive lives.
