Carnivorous Sponge Mickey
312/365 #hunt the chondrocladia
Going under the ocean to take on a ping pong tree sponge, aka chondrocladia lampadiglobus. Say that five times fast. Anyway, I took some extra inspiration from others in the classification but honestly this one came together fairly quickly. It was a last minute replacement for a different concept and I honestly like it better!
I am making 365 new versions of Mickey Mouse for the public domain and releasing them under public domain all year long.
You can join the initiative to #hunt the mouse or suggest a theme yourself via my ask box.

Rare carnivorous sponge lives on in Croatia
"Dugi Otok (“long island” in English) is Croatia’s seventh largest island. It’s home in part to Telascica Nature Park, which also comprises 13 other islets and rocks off Dugi Otok’s coast. In the depths of a half-cave in Telascica on the islet of Garmejak Veli, lies Abestopluma hypogea, a carnivorous sponge with appetite for crabs. The sponge was discovered in Adriatic waters in 2000. This was only the second time the species was found to exist in the world."

Sponge-Harp Chondrocladia lyra is a species of carnivorous deep-sea sponge recently discovered in California. The upright branches of harp sponges are covered with Velcro-like hooks for ensnaring their prey.
Look at This: A New Species of Carnivorous Sponge
The elusive harp sponge dwells nearly two miles below the surface of the ocean, far deeper than humans are able to explore. No one even knew they existed before scientists off California’s Monterey Bay used a remote control vehicle to spy on the meat-eating sponge from afar. Their findings, published Oct. 18 in Invertebrate Biology, reveal the secrets of this slow-motion hunter. read more…
