Watched Mikey and Nicky
Spent a while thinking about how I could write about the shadows in this movie, about the way that even in the bright artificial light everything feels cloaked in a darkness that is both warm and icy, inviting and cruel. The darkness piercing through the veneer we show to the world. To the anger and the humor and the hate and the love all emerging and all deranging as the late night turns to early morning. About how sudden cuts and lights going on and off shift our focus, remind us of the world even as we drive ourselves deeper into the egomania of the two protagonists. About how as the night ends and Mikey comes home he is irremediably alienated from his wife, who he can't see as a person, and who doesn't know him at all. About how maybe all of these relationships would look different, more common but less familiar, more amicable but more distant, in the light of day.
And then the sun came up. And my heart broke.

No Carols in Norway. Lots of Carols in Riverdale. Can Archie afford presents for so many Carols?
Carol Jones is looking over at the reader for some reason.
Doesn't "some Holly" suggest more than one?
- You’re mad. Come on. Don’t be mad at me. - You’ve got all the friends, and you’ve got all the money. Did you have to do that to me in front of some dumb bitch to prove you got all the women? - I didn’t know that was gonna happen. Honest to God. She screws anyone. - But me. Everybody but me. - Is that my fault? Don’t get mad at me ‘cause some dumb hooker turned your down. - She’s your girl. She’s not a hooker. You don’t pay for that. - Mikey, she’s a psycho. You gotta tell her you love her. You give her a few bucks, you tell her it’s a present. It thought it will be interesting for you. - Bullshit. You knew what would happen. - Honest to God, Mikey, I didn’t. I wouldn’t do anything to hurt you on purpose. I wouldn’t do anything to make you look bad. You’re like my family, I love you. - I think you’d make your family look bad on purpose. ‘Cause I don’t think you love anyone but you.

The Carol Grace Centennial
Carol Grace (1924-2003) had the bad fortune to be born on September 11, but that inauspicious date only spoiled two of her birthdays. Today Grace (she had many last names) is best remembered as the wife of both William Saroyan and Walter Matthau (in succession, of course), but her own life was pretty remarkable as well. She was born out of wedlock on the Lower East Side to Russian Jewish…
