Finally had time to draw for funsies so here's my submission for @creatingblackcharacters DTIYS challenge!!

Character is Carole Pepper from Honkai Impact 3rd

I already knew Hoyoverse was Like This (racist with insane levels of colorism) but oh my god?? You would NOT have guessed this character was Black without seeing her mother. Great pick for a DTIYS she needed some work for sure

Some notes are scribbled on the canvas but I'll also type things under the cut:

First, I made sure her skin tone was close to her mother's, and that she has recognizably Black features, instead of the Hoyoverse Special(tm) generic anime face.

For her hair I did twists, with bangs, and curled out slightly at the ends, to kinda match the silhouette of the original style. To keep some of the motifs from her bajillion accessories, I added hair beads and charms! (Got hairstyle inspo from ms_prettyandpink on insta, pls check out her fashion reels she's an ~artiste~)

Made her eyes brown but put the gold in an eyeshadow look!

Then I just did a bunch of tweaks to her outfit to remove the overabundance of detail/clutter that these designs often have.

Retained one of those belts to use with some ripped jeans lmao. It felt better giving her a liiiittle more coverage than bicycle shorts(?)

Thank you CBC for doing art challenges like these, it really shows how many people don't even fucking try, huh?

Character: Carole Pepper - Honkai Impact 3 (miHoyo)

Oh BOY the original design.....😭😭

This is unfortunately not surprising given what I've seen of miHoyo's track record for Black and Brown characters, but even still I am never forgiving them for this one omg

I had a lot of fun redesigning this character and I'm very happy with how it turned out! Thank you as always to Ice for creating this challenge and for all the incredible work you do! I have learned a lot from your blog and appreciate everything you provide on this site ❤❤

Details under the cut cause I've seen others do this before and it looked fun!

• Colour-picked Carole's skintone for this drawing from the official art of her mom, Lewis (Seriously, her mom was RIGHT THERE and they STILL made her that pale???????? HELLO??????????)

• I'm sorry but these designs are so overly complicated for no reason, I was struggling to figure out what any part of her outfit was in the beginning 😭😭😭 I wound up simplifying and taking out many parts of the original outfit to make it easier to see.

• I might have mistaken the jacket wrapped around her waist for denim shorts...but I decided to keep it once I realized cause I thought it looked better lol (also did I use pngs for the bandaids? Shhh don't look at that lol)

• I didn't know what I wanted to do for her hair at first, so I looked online and found two super cute hairstyles I really liked for inspo! ♡♡

• I liked her golden eyes but I wanted to make them brown, so I used the gold in her eyes for her eyelashes instead!

• I love all the cute charms and keychains she has on her outfit! Those are all mostly the same save a few colour differences, but I found an official(?) image of her with this really cute plushie (see below) that I turned into another keychain for her!

• I wanted to add at LEAST one crystal charm in her hair; was originally gonna make it pink but it blended in too much with the pink in her hair, so I colour-picked the blue from her mom's outfit instead <3

• I know nothing about this character, so I had to look her up. Unfortunately but not surprising, there was little to no info on Carole (or her mom!) on the game's wiki. Personality, backstory, ANYTHING??? Basically nothing unless I missed it somewhere, so I had to make do with what little info I had going into the challenge. Either way, I hope I did her justice 🫶🫶

i was originally going to give her straight hair or braids but decided against it because i think she was done wrong enough & she should be able to have her natural hair out. she’s a makeup girlie of course so i gave her the pink/yellow to stay cohesive with the rest of her. loved drawing her!! SO FUN! my old days of mihoyo are coming back to me

my take on carole pepper for @creatingblackcharacters dtiys!!

i was a huge honkai fan around the time of carole's release as a playable character, so i felt personally compelled to participate in this one. carole, as i remember her, is a sweet cheerful girl who loves fashion and being cute. in the story mode that introduces her, she is the thematic embodiment of youth and freedom. in fights, she does heavy damage and breaks shields for the team, but she's also the team's little sister who they take care of, and while she feels embarassed by her overbearing mom, she stil admires her and is following in her footsteps as a valkyrie. all this to say, she's a very fun and compelling character, and she deserved much much better than the "Black girl who hates being Black" nonsense she got as a character trait, and that lazy design. i hope i've done her some justice <3

Another DTIYS challenge by @creatingblackcharacters!! :^D

First off, the original design was. Well.

It was genuinely appalling. I showed the og design to multiple people I know and none of them thought she was supposed to be Black. Like hoyoverse didn't even try SLIGHTLY.

First thing I did was give her the melanin they refused to give her bc theyre SPINELESS COWARDS. Knowing what I know about hoyo and honkai from general observation and some investigation, I'm not surprised. Its still infuriating though. Like did y'all even put one (1, singular) thought into this design and why is the answer no the fuck you didn't?

Anyways I liked the silvery/fuschia hair color, so I kept that but I gave her a cute shoulder length cornrow style!

The outfit was alright, but there was a LOT going on, so I simplified it a bit, and updated her gloves! Also the sleeves just. They were a mixture of puff, lantern and frill with just like. A hole in there also. So I changed them to a lantern sleeve connecting to the off-shoulder shirt! Very cute :^)

I am once again casting my wizard beam of Give Them Painted Nails

I liked the golden eye color, though I made the shades a bit warmer!

I haven’t actually played this game but the general consensus from people who have seems to have been fashionable and cute kid. I went with that!

Simplified her color palette

made her skin darker and changed features

gave her locs instead of the Generic Wavy hair

added loc sprinkles/loc beads because they’re cute

added a lot more bows because. Cute

put some meat on her bones because she’s a growing child

changed the top just bc the design felt too simple

gave her earrings

simplified the accessories on her top because er. I’m lazy and didn’t want to draw them

the bezier curve function really saved me for this one. Shameless plug but if you liked this you should check out this black edit of captain puffy

@creatingblackcharacters first fully rendered drawing I made for this DTIYS in a while, I think she turned out really cute!!

Carole’s original design…….it was dire, that’s all I need to say. Many such cases with Hoyoverse though since it’s infamous for treating its Black characters terribly as we all know

So, alongside very much fixing her EXTREMELY ambiguous Black design, her original outfit was also very clunky, so I adjusted that a bit ^_^ and some of the other details like the skirt, headband, and afro are there for #cuteness moments
