Shanna the She-Devil #1 (Seuling & Gerber/Tuska, Dec 1972). I was expecting something clearly linked to Ka-Zar and the Savage Land, but Shanna stands alone! An animal-loving ecologist, Shanna witnesses her mother and a beloved leopard murdered by guns. She relocates to an African jungle with the late leopard’s cubs. Shannaks much more political and articulate than Ka-Zar, but I can’t help hoping they cross paths soon.

Shanna the She-Devil #3 (Seuling/Andru, Apr 1973). Enjoyed this story a bit more ‘cause it leveraged Shanna’s backstory. Her education prepared her to confront a bizarre colony of bull-worshipping Minoans in her jungle…

Shanna the She-Devil #4 (Seuling & Gerber/Andru, June 1973). I have so many questions about the Mandrill, a new supervillain who seems to have a man’s body… and a primate’s face?! Not a mask, but an actual mandrill head. How?!

Shanna the She-Devil #2 (Seuling/Andru, Feb 1973). “Male chauvinism is simply everywhere!” I’ve enjoyed Ross Andru’s work on Spider-Man and Captain Marvel, but he doesn’t seem to have read the first issue. Shanna hates guns and wears a leopard-pelt outfit to keep her feline friends comfortable… But here she’s already using enemies’ assault rifles and her outfit has gotten skimpier. I enjoy cheesecake, but it’s a bummer when it undermines the established characterization. All this, plus racism! This book’s tough…
