Oskar Kokoschka, The Mandrill, 1926 oil on canvas Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam
Daredevil #112 (Gerber/Colan, Aug 1974). While President Man-Beast reigns in Counter-Earth’s America, the mutant Mandrill seizes the Oval Office here on Earth. Some truly harrowing situations test Daredevil’s reputation as the Man Without Fear. It’s wild that the Mandrill holds the whole country hostage in a scheme that lasted for multiple issues, yet it’s had no impact on the other Marvel books.

365 Marvel Villain paper cut-outs - one villain, every day, all year.
May 25th - The Mandrill
The bizarre villain known as The Mandrill is an evil Mutant whose mutation caused him to physically resemble an anthropomorphic mandrill monkey. He additionally gained the ability to exude a particular type of pheromone that has the effect of controlling the wills of women in his vicinity. For some reason, this power only effects women and will wear off shortly after his victims are no longer in his immediate vicinity. The Mandrill’s simian form also affords him enhanced strength, dexterity and reflexes. The Mandrill teamed up with Nekra and the two hatched a plot to take over an African Nation through a subversive cult primarily composed of women whose wills had been manipulated by his powers. This plot was thwarted by Shanna The She-Devil. The villain later showed up in America and once more tried to garner power by way of a cult of mind-controlled women called Black Spectre. This time his scheme was foiled by The Thing, Daredevil and The Black Widow. Subsequent capers saw The Mandrill facing off against Spider-Man, She-Hulk and The Defenders. Following an escape from The Raft SuperMax prison, The Mandrill fell in with The Hood’s criminal syndicate. The Mandrill first appeared in Shanna The She-Devil #4.
One of the weirder villains in the Marvel Universe, The Mandrill often ran up against Daredevil. Daredevil #112, August 1974. Writer Steve Gerber; artists Gene Colan and Frank Giacoia. Cover by Gil Kane.
IT’S YA GIRL ((drawn w references for like, once))
Daredevil #111 (Gerber/Brown, July 1974). The Mandrill employs mesmerism and blackmail to protect his nefarious plan: toppling the US government! Now Matt’s gotta face Natasha, Shanna, Nekra, and… the Silver Samurai!
Shanna the She-Devil #4 (Seuling & Gerber/Andru, June 1973). I have so many questions about the Mandrill, a new supervillain who seems to have a man’s body… and a primate’s face?! Not a mask, but an actual mandrill head. How?!
