From basically the moment I found out I was pregnant with our second child I was really excited that I’d have the chance to tandem wear Luna with her sibling. Two days ago, at 3 days post partum, the opportunity struck: I was nursing S in a rebozo carry when L suddenly ran over yelling “up! up! Mama back!” Now, I wouldn’t have chosen a rebozo + ruck combination if I was planning to tandem ahead of time, and I wasn’t exactly sure about the whole idea (it was, after all, my first day really moving around freely on my feet since the birth), but I couldn’t say no to the sweetness of L’s request. Up she went!
It was so exciting! I was a new kind of super! Both my girls lovingly snuggled against me at once? Bliss.
Until I put my hand on S’s bum and felt the all too familiar warm wetness of fresh pee...

Being 39 weeks pregnant and parenting a toddler has taught me things; some of these things I “knew” already but experiencing them has given me a deeper level of understanding and appreciation. I’ve learned that toddlers really are babies; they look bigger than little babies and they walk and they talk and they can trick you into thinking they're big kids, but the truth is they really are babies. The wordless cries have turned into fussing and “whining” and the toothless smiles have turned into “I did it!” and “high five!” The reality is though that they are still very much in need of the closeness and reassurances that infants demand. Luna doesn’t know how to express all those bigs feelings but if you're paying attention the signs are all clearly there. Being so far into pregnancy has changed our babywearing routine in more ways than one but I have learned that a parent will go to great lengths to give their child a safe place in the world. I have learned that I don’t have a big kid yet, and I’m happy with that realization. People are quick to throw the word “big” are toddlers: “you’re a big girl now,” “you’re too big for that,” etc. I have learned that I am not hindering or stunting my child by treating her like the baby she is. I have learned that I, too, am soothed by our embrace. Most of all, I have learned that while there is much to learn, if I quiet myself I already know the most important thing: if she needs me I will come running. Again and again and again. Sometimes tired and weary, sometimes feeling broken, sometimes a few moments late, but running just the same.
