The children were de-facto slaves as they could almost never pay off their death benefit – many would then remain workers into their adult life, suffering from abuse and physical disabilities due to extremely poor working conditions. Many would die in accidents such as the one in 1881 where 65 people, including 19 children, were killed in the mine. American writer Brooker T. Washington, who travelled to Sicily in 1910 to study the condition of the poor and the working class of Europe, had said that "a sulphur mine in Sicily is about the nearest thing to hell that I expect to see in this life."
