There is nothing like taking a summer road trip. The long hours on the road, kids bickering, leg cramps and the need for a pit stop makes any road trip memorable. But all of the discomfort on the road is worth it when you have a pot of gold, or glass of gold, at the end of a rainbow. This year, the husband, kids and I decided to drive the Pacific Crest Trail (thank you 'Wild' movie for the inspiration). Calling the trip adventurous would be an understatement as each day brought something new. Luckily, our taste buds were up for the adventure and our need to chow down was met at the scenic Thunder Island Brewing Company in Cascade Locks, Oregon. Overlooking the Columbia River Gorge, Thunder Island Brewing Company is surrounded by spectacular views of the gorge, the mighty Bridge of the Gods and the lushious green gateway into the state of Washington. If your looking for a spot where nature meets good food, this is the place to eat. Parking There is plenty of parking in front of the brewery/tap room for cars and bikes alike at the end of the winding road. If you're lucky, you'll get a chance to see the train pass by as you park. Ordering Ordering is easy. After browsing the menu, walk up to the counter and place your order. If there's a wait (this place is pretty awesome, so expect some sort of wait during the day) then check out some of their merchandise. You might find a cool tee or hat to wear in support of this brewery back home. Once you place your order, take a seat inside where you will find camping accessories adorning the pub walls or outside overlooking the gorge. Food Craft beer, craft root beer, vegetarian and meat dishes. This place definitely embodies the farm-to-table movement. Food is served fresh and made to order. Seasoned just right, dishes are light, but filling, and pair well with any beer you choose from the menu. Service Service is great here. The staff is very relaxed and take the time to chat with their guests. You can even pick their brain about the area and they are ready to share their knowledge. Things to know when visiting: Thunder Island Brewing Company is very family friendly. If you are like us and take the kids everywhere, this would be a spot the kids will enjoy. There are games kids can grab and play while you enjoy one of Thunder Island's fantastic beers. Thanks to Yatzee, both of my kids were occupied while mom and dad enjoyed a meal and beer in peace. Delicious pub food on the menu... Awesome beer on tap! For more information about this spot, visit Thunder Island Brewing http://thunderislandbrewing.com/ Salud y buen provecho!
