News! Fiddle/Sticks Part III
Friends, as some of you know, our video crew and journalist Craig H. have been involved with a special media project known as Fiddle/Sticks by the acclaimed fiddler Casey Driessen. Casey is one of the most respected musicians in roots music as an instrumentalist, teacher and innovator. This ongoing project pairs his groove-heavy fiddling with renown drummers and percussionists for sessions where true collaboration, improvisation and composition takes place. Here it's world percussionist Jamey Haddad, whose resume is summarized below. This is some of the most revelatory music-making you can see - a real time discovery of what's possible on instruments and with sound. Set aside 20 minutes to watch this short documentary about the sessions.
In his official release, Casey offers background on his formidable collaborator:
Jamey Haddad is regarded as one of the foremost world music and jazz percussionists in the U.S. He is a professor of performance and improvisation at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, on faculty at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and a past professor of Boston's Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory. A member of Paul Simon's band, Haddad is a three time recipient of National Endowment for the Arts grants, a Fulbright Fellowship, and can be heard on over 200 recordings.
Haddad, being of Lebanese descent, started his percussion career playing the darbuka with his family and at parties, and by the age of 12 was actively gigging on drum set. In college he was introduced to South Indian drummer Ramnad Raghavan, with whom he studied with for 4 years. He has traveled the world, studying and absorbing drum patterns and culture, and integrating these lessons back into jazz and contemporary music. Haddad's ice breaking move in a new country? "Just hang out."
Here's some fresh video I produced in tandem with some of the Music City Roots crew and for my pal Casey Driessen as part of his ongoing Fiddle/Sticks project. The drummer Jamey Haddad was quite somebody to meet and hear. He's one of the leading experts in world percussion and a touring member of Paul Simon's band. Besides a lot more. Here's the official brief on the project:
Fiddle/Sticks: The Drummer Project by Casey Driessen is a collaborative exploration of rhythm which pairs Casey—the leading voice in percussive fiddle/violin technique (a.k.a. the Chop)—with a list of the landmark drummers and percussionists of our time. Cutting across all genres and traditions, the project documents these rhythmic explorations through recordings, videos, photos and journals. It serves as an inspirational and instructional resource for drummers, percussionists, fiddlers and everyone in the music community interested in pushing the boundaries of their instruments and their music.
