Devil's Mile 2014
A relentlessly-paced hybrid of gritty crime thriller and Lovecraftian supernatural horror, The Devil’s Mile follows a trio of kidnappers who take an ill-advised detour en route to deliver their hostages – two teenage girls – to their mysterious and powerful employer. When they accidentally kill one of the girls during a botched escape attempt, their simmering mistrust explodes into shocking violence. But what they thought was their worst case scenario is only the beginning, as they are engulfed by the hellish forces that haunt the road – a road they realize they may never escape. Now captors and captive must fight together to escape the monstrous forces pursuing them and somehow survive… THE DEVIL’S MILE.

‘American Ghost Story’ Review – An Unending Road of Grudge Style Horror
I never really understand the need to rename horror films once they have already been released under a different name, but I guess there are plenty of reasons that the audience just don’t need to know. American Ghost Story, formally known as Devil’s Mile is a film that managed to go through this process for its release in the UK, but luckily the film outshines the confusion.

‘American Ghost Story’ haunts UK DVD shelves this March
One of our favorite films of 2014 was filmmakers James O’Brien’s DEVILS MILE. This supernatural epic brought the worlds of the macabre and crime thrillers together for a pure head f** of a film that had us raving all last year. Well it now get’s its UK makeover under the title AMERICAN GHOST STORY and will be hitting DVD shelves this March 19th. The film stars David Hayter (X-MEN), Casey Hudecki…

The direction most north american filmmakers are taking these days displaying gritty tones in a crime story atmosphere seems to be working. So it was only a matter of time before a filmmaker would exploit the noir sub genre and add a little supernatural flair to the mix. In Joseph O’Brien’s DEVILS MILE we see a complete cross breeding between the indie filmmakers of our generation and culture mixed an Asian influenced horror storytelling of Dante’s Inferno proportions. For three kidnappers DEVILS MILE is a shortcut down a long road of delusions and sheer paranoia and terror.
“The road will never let you leave” bangs in the back of your cerebrum as you watch this uniquely crafted tale. Our three criminals at the helm of this disaster are the riveting Jacinta (Casey Hudecki) imposing Toby (David Hayter) and the overprotecting Cally (Maria Del Mar). Their personalities shine quite brightly during the introduction of the film. This allows the classic criminal element to exist and the look created by O’Brien is an exact representation of the finest north american indie film making we have today.

Toby is a soldier who only looks to get the job done and is not too keen on this experience with the two ladies. How could he be with the annoyance of a back seat complaints from Jacinta and the constant support she receives from Cally. After an unfortunate stop at a gas station the three criminals in DEVILS MILE along with their captives soon enter a world where the only thing that remains consistent is the dread.
Interactions with the supposed head of the faction Mr. Arkadi (Frank Moore) create a devilish (pun intended) narrative which gives hints and clues to the process developing before your eyes. Joseph’s brilliance comes to the forefront when the grisly story becomes a euphoric bliss of the damned. I was taken back by the Asian styled theme that presented itself during the climactic parts of the film. Attributes that resembled JU-ON and some of the best Taiwanese horror films are all available in DEVILS MILES. It was an unexpected approach in the film but really played well to the story. The performance by Hudecki and Del Mar provided enough depth and sympathy to engage the audience in their plight to escape. As with all features in this realm there is never a clear indication of hope for the actors just chances for solutions. Where DEVILS MILE is different is it holds the uncanny ability to persuade the viewer into thinking that hope is real. Just don’t forget “The road will never let you leave!”.

DEVILS MILE is exhilarating! Its a perfect blend of North American cinema and Asian demonology. Filmmaker Joseph O’Brien is a talent we need to keep an eye on. To create something so raw, but spectacular and explosive is hard to do these days. You can tell he was raised on the late night cinema that has inspired many great talents. DEVILS MILE is a result of this macabre and is a journey into hell and back!
4 / 5

The path less taken ‘Devil’s Mile’ premieres at Fantasia
Eerie and trippy, Devil’s Mile sends us down a path that no one should travel. Set to premiere at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival Toby (David Hayter) drives two hostages down a highway as a short cut and instead goes through hell. The X-MEN writer is the lead character, while his supporting cast seems to really drivethe story on. This film is pure insanity, but in a good way.…
