Marie Avgeropoulos, Tasya Teles, Sachin Sahel

There are three cast members in particular that I want to appreciate today: Marie Avgeropoulos (Octavia), Tasya Teles (Echo) and Sachin Sahel (Jackson).

Marie Avgeropoulos is a legend. She’s grown so much as an actress through her role as Octavia, and throughout she’s always given a hundred and twenty percent. I have no doubt in my mind that it is her commitment and heart that had the writers grow the role of Octavia to be so much more than who she started out as. As I understand it, in the books Octavia is barely there, but in the show she’s a clear part of the leading trio, and often ends up eclipsing Clarke and Bellamy in terms of character growth and impact on the storyline.

Marie did that. It was Marie’s unfailing commitment and dedication to Octavia that made her a character the writers never tired of, and never abandoned or resigned to unimportance. Even when her storyline hasn’t been as prominent, such as in seasons 2 and 6, these seasons were laying important groundwork for her storyline in the future. Octavia Blake more than anyone else had a guardian angel in the writers’ room looking out for her, constantly growing her story, keeping her characterization consistent, and that was all thanks to Marie.

It’s no secret that I love Echo, so of course I appreciate Tasya Teles as well, but the reason I want to pay her particular appreciation here isn’t so much for her acting as Echo, but for her resilience as a human being off-camera.

Tasya’s endured so much hate from certain corners of the fandom for her role as Echo, simply because people hate Echo for all sorts of reasons - her initial role as an antagonist being a relatively minor reason, but the main one being that Echo stood in the way of a ship that so many people wanted. No one should ever attack actors for such a thing, but I saw so much of it. Plus the sheer pettiness of some stans who would leave Echo out of multi-character edits or gifsets (while including one-episode minor characters) simply because they didn’t want to acknowledge she existed. Tasya deserved better than the way so many fans of the show treated her.

But she has borne all of it with grace. All the respect to Tasya.

Just like Tasya, I want to appreciate Sachin Sahel not so much for his on-screen work (though Jackson is my favourite male character), but for his off-screen existence, where if you follow him on social media you can see what a great loving and beautiful human he is.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an actor play a recurring role for seven seasons of a show be that dedicated to its promotion and interaction with fans. He’s active across all sorts of social media, interacting with fans of the show, sharing show content, as well as sharing all sorts of important non-show related content as well to get people politically engaged. Sachin also shares a lot of information relevant to Black Lives Matter (which, if you want to engage with on a fandom level as well, come give us prompts over at @t100fic-for-blm​!) and other causes important these days.

Honourable mention shout-outs also to Richard Harmon (Murphy), Lindsey Morgan (Raven), Ivana Milicevic (Diyoza), Adina Porter (Indra) and Shelby Flannery (Hope) - these five were also incredible!
