American Chestnut tree (Castanea dentata) along the yellow trail in the Karner Barrens of Albany Pine Bush (@apbpc). The first and third slides show a few dead leaves still attached to the winter tree. Even in their dried and wrinkled state, on closer examination they're still quite distinctive. The second slide shows the broken blisters caused by the Chestnut blight that will ultimately lead this tree to an early death, probably in the next handful of years. The fourth slide shows the small stand of mostly dead trees that this one sits amongst, likely some other chestnuts that have already succumbed to the blight. I've often posted about dead or dying American Chestnut trees. Castanea dentata, the once great American Chestnut. There are quite a few growing in the woods behind North Bethlehem park in Albany (I've probably posted about them before), but all are just small and measly. You might think these are just young trees that will one day grow into the great giants that were once common. Alas, that's unlikely. This one is already showing cankers that are likely the results of Chestnut blight. The larger one in the final picture had already been girdled by the blight; there's not a single leaf and only a few twiggy branches on the dark, dead, bare trunk.
