The Old Union Church in the German Valley section of Washington Township (Morris County), #NewJersey. The church was built in 1774 to replace a log meetinghouse at the same location. The church was unusual in its construction as it had no steeple and no gable ends. It served German Lutheran and Dutch Reformed congregations until 1832 when the two sects built their own churches. The church was abandoned and by 1890 most of the roof had caved in and second floor stonework crumbled. In 2010, the remains were stabilized and the original entrance arch rebuilt using historical photographs and original stones from the site. The church is surrounded by a burial ground. Henry Melchior Muhlenberg D.D., the patriarch of the Lutheran Church in the United States, organized the congregation that met at the site. His eldest son, the Reverend Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg, also served as pastor there and served as a major general in the Continental Army. Had some beautiful views on my group bike ride along the Columbia Trail from Long Valley to High Bridge and back. It's a popular and easy trail for biking. At the end, most of the group had a late lunch at Long Valley Brewpub--I ordered a venison reuben.
