Castiel - The Ever Present.

Even to his own detriment.

First we meet Cas in Season 6 he's fighting the war with Raphael. He even makes a quip at Dean about showing up for the Staff of Moses, not because Dean called.

Never mind that Dean spends the rest of this Season as the only one who calls Castiel - unless Cas has specifically told someone else to pray for him.

Soon after we see him when the boys figure out when Sam is Soulless. He's checking on Samuel Campbell's soul, and the boys ask him to get any leads on the soul thing. Castiel says this -

And the worst part is he means it. He genuinely means this and I don't think he even realises that he means it. Look at his face; He's annoyed, angry, and so defeated. He says it so facetiously, he's staring down an increasingly escalating war one that he's sure at this point he has no hope of winning. And here are Dean and Sam with problems that could either mean nothing or make his problems so much worse.

He wants so badly to throw it back in their face, to make them feel for even a second that no, his life does NOT in fact revolve around their problems. Around Dean's problems. He wants to impart for even a second that there is something bigger than them, than either of them, that he's staring down alone.

It happens over and over again, where Castiel will throw aside everything he's doing and everything he's working towards for them. He does it for the Hail Mary run on Crowley's fortress.

He does it when Dean's restored Sam's soul, just to watch him as he recompletes.

He displays this the best in "My Heart Will Go On". I can't find a GIF or a video of it, but when his whole plan with the Titanic goes sideways and Atropos threatens to kill Dean and Sam, he abandons the plan. For them. Of course there's some handwringing over it, he tries to rationalise it both ways. He tries so hard to find a way to have it both ways, but when he realises he can't, he throws it away. For them.

Based on what we see in The Man Who Would Be King he wants to have his cake and eat it too. We see it in Mother Dearest, we see it in My Heart Will Go On, we see it all the way back in The Third Man. Civil War: Heaven Edition was Crowley's idea, and I don't think he knew what he was signing up for. He never once thought that it would put Sam and Dean in the crossfire. Crowley even leverages that against him - Raphael's Heaven would include erasing every thing that Sam and Dean did. He can't have that happen.

We all know what happens next. I don't have to rehash the entirety of Man Who Would Be King. What I do want to point out is that even as Sam and Dean found out about Castiel working with Crowley, he insists he's still their friend. And he IS. He is because he believes it, he's convinced himself all of him is in it for Sam and Dean.

"Of course, your problems always come first," he said so facetiously. So contemptuously. But every action he's taken this whole season is because it's true, and I think deep deep down he knows that. He's not just angry at them, he's angry at himself. Their problems do come first. They always had. They always will.
