Peter being white should not make anyone angry, and it shouldn’t turn anyone off of Spider-man. Andrew Garfield won’t be coming back and that’s a shame, but it’s also an opportunity. If they cast a new Peter, they can have him interact with the Avengers, and since they wanted to set up the Sinister Six anyway, they can adapt Death of Spider-Man and use that as an intro for Miles Morales.
For the record, I think it’s awesome for so many people to want to see a Black Spider-Man. I just think it shouldn’t be Peter, and for the following reasons.
1. We have a Black and Latino Spider-Man named Miles Morales. His story is so fantastically written that Marvel is taking him from the dying Ultimate Universe and moving him to the 616 Marvel Universe this year, even making him an Avenger. That is awesome and a testament to the fact that Miles is a great character who deserves adaption for the big screen. Having a Black Peter Parker lead into Miles would be redundant in many eyes, since he was created in the spirit that Spider-Man could be anybody. If we get BPP, people may believe we don’t need Miles and he may never get his own movie.
2. There’s always controversy when a character’s ethnicity is changed in casting. This would be a distraction from the movie itself and if the choice of actor is poor, would be a setback. With the above, there’d be no excuses left.
3. Miles has his own supporting cast. Aunt May, Mary Jane, Gwen and Jameson make appearances, but you get a fresh ensemble. Miles’ parents Jefferson and Rio, his best friend Ganke, his roommate Judge, his girlfriend Katie, his uncle Aaron and police captain Frank Quaid are all great characters, and they would populate a fresh and interesting corner of the MCU.
4. Miles and Peter deal with a very similar rogues’ gallery. You could use his movies to intro new takes on baddies we’ve seen (Goblin, Electro, Venom, Kingpin) and villains making their film debuts (Prowler, Kraven, Mysterio) without it all feeling old hat.
Just my thoughts. If we get a Black Peter Parker, I’ll accept it. I’ll probably even get excited depending on who is cast. I just really don’t want the best new character of the past 5 years to be thrown aside because of it. I want him to have the same impact that he had when he first showed up on the page, and if that means I have to wait for the end of Dylan O’Brien or Logan Lerman’s tenure, I can deal.
Just my thoughts.
