Okay, so as a rabid... I mean avid Castle fan, I've decided to add something to the fandom this year instead of aimlessly watching the episodes and internally fangirling or raging over what just happened. Instead of doing long, drawn on essays, I'm going to attempt to do a short and sweet bulleted summary of my favorite and not so favorite things. I may add some random musings from time to time, but I make no promises!
1. Seeing badass beckett (and yes it was a trending topic on twitter for a brief moment) tackle that big dude in the junkyard. The rage evident in her, made me believe that her character believed that Castle was in that Escalade. Seeing Ryan have to physically pull her off of him was amazing!
2. The convo b/w Gates and Beckett. Beckett is so worried that she is going to get booted from the case and all the captain wants to do is reassure her that everyone is looking out for her. I never thought I would say this at the beginning of season 4, but I frickin love Captain Gates!
3. The scene at the loft b/w Martha and Alexis, it was so heartbreaking to see a daughter so worried that her parent may not return. And Martha was a pillar of hope during the entire episode.
4. The scene at the loft with Castle's 3 women. Again, I love how Martha reassured Beckett and squashed the thought of Castle having "misgivings" about marrying Beckett.
5. When Beckett put up her Castle Murderboard at her shutters at home, I found it heartbreaking in so many ways. Here, Beckett finally put away her mom's murderboard after 14 years and now she has to put one up for the love of her life.
6. Can I get a hell yeah for Fillion's scruff?!?!? His scruffiness added at least 2 points to his hotness scale.
7. The handholding at the hospital. The music, the emotion, followed by the heartbreak of all 3 women when they realize that he isn't waking up cemented the scene as one of the most memorable to me.
8. Having Lanie look him over like she would a dead body was awesome.
9. Pimped out sky-blue dinghy! I never thought I would hear the word dingy so much in one episode.
10. Fake Jenkins, that dude seriously creeps me out and I am intrigued by him. I love his high pitched scream of, "trash, trash." I know he is in the 2nd ep, but not the 3rd so we shall see how this storyline plays out! My guess is that fake Jenkins bites the bullet in the second episode.
11. I thought Fillion did an awesome job at playing the aloof patient that has no idea what is going on. Seriously, I mean that as a compliment. I felt like Castle really was an amnesiac and that he is not faking it.
12. The final scene in the bedroom. I am so glad Castle came across as apolagetic and empathetic. Kate being cocooned into Castle's chest was one of the most heartwarming parts of the episode.
1. When Espo gave Beckett coffee. I get what they were trying to do, but NO NO NO. Some times their relationship comes off much closer than it should be. I mean MAYBE I can see it as a brother comforting a sister in her time of need, but so often their relationship comes off so much more intimate than that. Seeing people use Espokett on Twitter makes me wanna throw up all the food and wine I just had an Epcot's food and wine fest. Ewww just wwww.
2. Actually, do you know what pretty much all of the Espo moments were bad moments. I recently saw an episode from season 4 where he calls Castle his bro. I understand that the want to make the connection that Beckett is more like Espo and Castle is more like Ryan, but seriously you don't have to have him hating on the guy so much!
3. The whole amnesia thing. Since the first time I remember seeing it as a child on Full House, I have never liked it as a device in a TV show.
1. They had a whole scene where Ryan and Espo talked about the passenger side tailgate getting hit of Castle's car, but yet in the end of the finale and the beginning of this ep, you see a 2 lane highway and the SUV going along Castle's driver side. It wouldn't make any sense to me the SUV would switch to the shoulder of the road to hit that side of the car. Just sloppy if you ask me.
2. Castle's hospital band says date of admission as 10/2/14. If Castle was missing 2 months, that would put him being hospitalized in July! NOT October. Seriously guys, its simple math. Don't make the band so damn visible or get the facts right!
3. Having Castle drop off the bag of cash. I don't know how you can rationalize him dropping off cash(not held at gunpoint) AFTER the car crash and going off grid. I feel like this was a tool used to plant doubts in the team's mind, especially Espo's and if Castle hadn't woken up an amnesiac, there is no way that dude would have been able to explain himself. Oh I also don't like Espo promptly going to Castle planning the whole thing ager seeing that security cam footage. Way to have faith in your bro! I wouldn't want Espo standing up for me at a trial.
4. The fact that Kate Beckett STILL HAS HER APT!!! Dammit, I can be a conservative when it comes to things like relationships, but seriously you were about to walk down the aisle, you would think she would have had her boxes packed and shipped to the loft. What they were gonna come back from the honeymoon and live in different apartments. And the thing that infuriates me is that there is no reason. She could have put a murderboard up in the loft. And if she was living at the loft, we could of seen more interaction b/w her and Martha and Alexis during those 2 months that Castle was missing, which would not of hurt in my opinion.
5. I feel like there may be too many unanswered questions regarding Castle's disappearance. Why the bullet holes in the dinghy? Why was Castle's tux in perfect condition if he was wearing it for the car crash and getting dragged up the hill? So many questions... So little time...
6. Castle's beach house is most definitely OCEANFRONT. The scene in Season 4 proves that. Seriously people, we aren't stupid!
Overall, I really liked this episode. Definitely not my favorite season premiere, but lets face it, we've had some pretty great ones. I think part of the hate people have for this episode is that there are sooooo many unanswered questions. Hopefully we will get some resolution to what happened to Castle in episode 2 cause I honestly don't know how we would be expected to move forward to the lighter episodes of the first half of the season without it. So that's my take on episode 1, let me know if you agree/disagree with me and some comments would be much appreciated!
