The TMNT being bilingual is a headcanon I hold so close to my heart that I forget that it’s not actually canon. (At least not in the media I’ve seen)
Those turtles can speak Japanese fluently. They can. And they do.
Leo and Mikey being the worst offenders. Leo is closest to Splinter so he speaks Japanese more than he speaks English, and Mikey just likes bothering his beloved father in a language he doesn’t have to mentally translate.
Raph yells at Casey in Japanese and gets frustrated when Casey doesn’t understand because, to Raph, he’s speaking clear as day, what is this hobo bozo not getting??? And then he realises that Casey is American….
