I knew it would happen because often times the need to contribute to movement making is performative or about personal discomfort. And that is temporary. My day up to this point: meditation, write in my journal, coffee, then look at which day of social distancing this is for me (58), then yoga, shower, food, twist hair, walk the dog, check the mail... Aha! “Conjure Woman” by Afia Atakora has arrived in the mail. Whatever else I had scheduled for this day is no more. I won’t leave my bed for the next day (or two) other than for food and to walk the dog because I’ve been waiting to read this book since I first heard about it! . . . Of course I’m interested in a tale of women journeying pre and post civil war with the gifts and the ability to conjure and heal. There is tension for the daughter, Rue, following in her mother’s footsteps as a midwife/healer and I’m already thinking of the conversation I had with @unearthandbloom on Episode 2 of the #CasuallyBrilliant podcast about the hidden history and stories of ancestral religious identities and power and what they did (and continue to do) to protect us from what folk might think if they knew we had these gifts. Looking forward to diving in and, of course, I’ll share more on this experience soon. 1. Deacon Paula Welch use to quote theologian Martin Luther (I like her translation of his quote) by saying, "There is more work done in prayer than in work itself. My God I wanted to understand this then. I am an #earthsign and a super #Capricorn and I feel like if you know a Capricorn you understand the rest of that. I don't need to explain. 2. The other day I was recording a #CasuallyBrilliant #podcast episode (that I can't wait to share with y'all) and I told the guest, "During this pandemic, I have been working to understand my work in a new way. It is my JOB to take a bath and lay in the tub every day. That is my JOB!" 3. My daddy gets a kick out of me laying down every time I facetime him. He is always so confused abt why I'm laying down when we talk. Like - what am I supposed to be doing when I call him? My daddy has worked so hard all of his life. For years its the way the women in my family defined him. "He is a hard worker and a provider." What else is he? Who else is my dad outside of his work? I don't want to work so hard that that's the first thing you think of when it's time to compliment me. My dad is more than just his hard work. I want us to know it deeply before he leaves this earth. 4. This morning I took deep breaths for about 5 minutes and sang @jheneaiko "Trigger Protection Mantra" (Calm down. Calm down eventually. Protect your energy). I was in my #meditation thinking, "How did I wake up anxious? Like how?" And then I thought the words, "General #Anxiety" (which is a disorder). I don't want to live in a general state of anxiousness. The earth is groaning. I don't want to groan. The only groaning I wanna do all day long is (redacted). 5.
