Tom and Jerry: The Cat Concerto Directors: William Hanna & Joseph Barbera Studio: MGM | USA, 1947
This seems kind of familiar, doesn’t it?
What I Say: I'm fine.
What I Mean: It's 2018 and there's still no conclusive evidence to determine whether Rhapsody Rabbit or Cat Concerto was the original cartoon. There have been countless interviews in which both creators deny that they were the ones who plagiarized but we know that SOMEONE had to copy the other, both cartoons are too stylistically similar for it to be a coincidence. Laying out the facts, we know that both cartoons abruptly rushed their production schedule, that there may have been a mixup with TechniColor sending the wrong clip to the wrong studio, that the original pianist who was hired for one might have let it slip to the other, and that there may have been actual literal spies sent into either studio because that's how seriously they took these cartoons. We also know that both cartoons make little sense in the context of the overall cartoons. Why was Bugs Bunny battling a mouse when he has never done so before? Why were Tom and Jerry actually performing the music, a signature Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies trope, instead of simply doing their antics while the music played in the background as was typical for TJ cartoons? And where do the Mickey Mouse short and Woody Woodpecker short fit into all of this? Nobody knows. People have speculated for 70 years but there has never been any definitive answer as to which cartoon stole which idea and that is one of the most fascinating and frustrating mysteries I've ever seen. And if you think it's simple as just two dumb cartoons, just remember that this was during the beginning of the Cold War and every studio had political ties which means, you know, when I say that spies might have infiltrated the studios I mean actual legit government spies might have infiltrated the studios all in the name of copying a cartoon about an anthropomorphic animal playing a piano, and if that's not fascinating then I don't know what is.
Here, have a little Tom and Jerry to cheer you up!
Am I the only one who wishes that Tom would catch that mouse once and for all?
Tom and Jerry "Cat Concerto" [Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C# Minor]
If you grew up on this stuff you had a pretty fun childhood :) I did a presentation of Liszt in high school and to keep people interested, I played this entire video. Brings back such awesome memories.
Enjoy!
