Cat Gin when dinner is 3 seconds late…
Cat Gin doesn’t beg. Cat Gin doesn’t ask. Cat Gin demands.
Happy Endings for the Antagonists and/or Morally Gray Characters
I love fanfics. I’ve read a lot since … Oh no, now I feel old. Let’s say I’ve enjoyed fanfics for a long time. Unlike most, I have a reference for morally gray characters and down right evil ones. For example, in Batman, I love the Joker, and in Harry Potter, I love Severus Snape.
I’ve devoured a fair amount of fanfics mainly about antagonists or morally gray characters. Those who don’t play along with society rules. Many could be diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder–in layman’s terms, they are sociopaths and psychopaths. For the fluffiness inside of me, I wish everyone happy endings which they don’t tend to get.
The problem with writing happy endings for so-called evil characters is that many writers tend to wash away their negative traits so much so that they cease to be themselves. You could argue that it’s fanfiction and you could write whatever the hell you want. I don’t disagree. But I ask if you erase someone’s personality, are they even who they are anymore? You might as well write about someone else.
Their traits, be it negative or positive, make them who they are. That’s why we fall in love with them in the first place.
I think of fanfics as alternative universes when our favorite characters make different choices for the better or worse. We, as writers and readers, can explore more about their humanity or lack thereof. You know, to spend more time and hang out with our favorite characters and chill.
With the flood of serial killers documentaries in recent years, people tend to think if you’re a psychopath and/or a sociopath (it’s a spectrum, you can be both), you must be a serial killer (or a politician ;]). Psychopaths and sociopaths could lead moral lives like everyone else. The diagnoses–the traits of the characters don’t make them good or evil. It’s the choices they make.
Let’s put it this way. For people who lack empathy, they are very logical. If it’s in their incentives to behave, they will behave, i.e. why would I murder someone when I could get caught and lose everything?
I don’t think it’s explored enough in fanfiction. For the sake of a happy ending, writers tend to inject goodness out of nowhere and correct all the destructive behaviors. At least, give me a reason.
I love happy endings. All I write are feel-good fanfics. But give me a solid foundation on why happy endings happen.
(Hell, turn your maniacal character into a fluffy cat like I did in Gin—a cat’s life)
PS: This is just me procrastinating from actually working.
Cat Gin’s Halloween Part 1
Cat Gin hissed: No! I’m not sitting in a freaking pumpkin! There’s nothing you can do—
Vermouth kissed, kissed, and kissed until she smooched the fury out of his fur-ball.
Cat Gin pushed Vermouth’s cheek away: I don’t care what—
Vermouth scratched his chin.
Cat Gin purred: No … must resist …
PS: Getting a pumpkin bell for my cat even though he doesn’t wear collars. What is he going to do with it? I don’t know but I want one.
