What is the ideal amount of work-experience for MBA in India?
Should you go for MBA just after under-graduation? Should you work for a couple of years and then plan your MBA? If I have already worked for 5 years, am I too old for a 2 year MBA at an IIM? Most aspirants suffer from some version of these questions and the variety of opinion available do not make it easy.
Should I work or go directly for an MBA ?
Most advise that you will find will recommend in favour of working before going for an MBA. Working in a corporate helps you appreciate the teachings in the college better (especially the softer concepts like organizational behaviour). Your communication / analytical / management skills would also have improved while working and should help you navigate the material better and hopefully help secure better grades. Your financial status will also probably be better post two - three years of working.
However, there is a counter argument to this which should also be made. Jobs offered at most MBA colleges in India (including IIMs) are more at an entry level (or at a relatively junior level than various foreign MBAs). The companies offering these jobs also tend to prefer younger graduates as they feel they will adjust better in the role being offered. There are various instances where companies prefer candidates with low work experience compared to the one with more, all things kept constant.
The tradeoff - Go later and understand concepts better or go earlier and have a better shot at some companies.
Is it too late for an Indian MBA, if I have already worked for 4-5 years?
The apprehension is not without basis. Most of the MBA colleges (especially IIMs) have a younger demography. The average work experience would be close to 1-2 years and you would probably be among the few older people of the group (top 50 not top 5). However it is not a big disadvantage. Most people are able to mix well and the younger demography is also accepting. Placements are also not hampered and most companies which are open to hiring experienced talent do not discriminate.
Beyond 5 years of work experience, you are getting into endangered territory. Again, there should not be any problems in terms of adjustment or placements as long as you are making an effort to mix. In terms of placements, there might be some issues unless you have something in your resume which stands out.
