Cat took Martin by the shoulders and pushed him against the wall, hard. "Do you have any idea," she said, moving closer to press herself against him as one hand trailed up his neck to tangle in his hair, "how beautiful you are right now?" The other hand kept him pinned against the wall as she darted forward and pressed her lips to his.

Martin wasn’t sure what Cat was going to do until she kissed him. It was beautiful and longing. When they broke away, he gazed into her eyes. One of his eyes was brown and one was bright gold. “What was that for?” he gasped.

“That was for you,” she said, smiling. She let go of his hair, moving her hand to rest on the nape of his neck. “Unless you didn’t like it, in which case I guess it was for me.” She smiled and bit her bottom lip. It didn’t faze her particularly that one of his eyes had gone gold; she was just happy that he looked into hers without fear. If the walls started shaking then maybe she would worry about his power manifesting, but she’d always felt safe around Martin, despite his warning.

“So,” she asked, raising an eyebrow. “Did you like it?”

Cat stepped over the unconscious bodies of half-a-dozen Hydra agents before she was able to peer silently around the corner. Yes, there was Martin. She’d never been happier for her ability to follow a scent trail, flashy or not. Two agents had him cornered at the end of the hall. She took a minute to size up the situation. Most of the building was cleared—Martin was they last one they had to get out, so she didn’t have to worry about an attack coming from behind. She could probably get both of them on the ground with one kick. She’d worry about keeping them down after that.

She turned the corner and started a run. Without shoes she was practically silent, especially with the background noise of alarms going off and confusions. When she got close, she went into a slide, knocking the legs out from under both of the Hydra operatives.

“Martin, get the weapons,” she shouted. One of the agents had fallen nearly on top of her, and she snaked an arm around their neck.

A man was in her woods. Her woods. A man walking alone, pale like a ghost, smelling of military wool and of sweat. She stalked closer, through the trees, careful not to crack a branch or make a sound, until he was just beneath her.

And then she dropped, letting her weight take him to the ground with her pinning him, on clawed hand around his throat, not squeezing but letting the points of her claws rest along his jugular like a promise.

“What are you doing here?” she demanded, her voice a harsh contralto growl.

A new smell lay in the hallways, in the corners and the dark spots, in the back corridors. Cat was following it through one of the lesser-used passageways, because she recognized it but couldn’t quite put a name to it. Fiery and slightly sour. The trail had stopped for a bit and picked up again later a few times, but she had come to a point where she was pretty sure it had completely stopped, right in the middle of the hall with no doors or windows. She was confused for a moment, and then she heard a tiny sound, the smallest creaking of wood, and she followed it up, to the sound of breath and a heartbeat. Someone was clinging to the beams in the ceiling just behind, and he was blue.

“Well, hello there,” said Cat.

Cat crept up the fire escape as quietly as she could, until she could peer up at the roof. Yep, there was definitely someone on the roof. Sometimes she wished she still had normal human hearing and didn’t notice these things. It was a man in some kind of red and black suit and mask. She sighed inwardly. Men in masks were always trouble. She hoped he was the city-saving kind and not the city-leveling kind.

“Hey,” she said, waving over the edge of the roof but not climbing all the way up, just in case he decided to shoot at her. “Nice night, huh?”

Headcanon: Cat’s Scars

Cat had plenty of scars, but it was the big ones that people noticed, on the rare occasions she let them be seen. The ones that would never fade to white, that would likely stay raised and pink and rough for the rest of her life. They were all claw marks, and each one was a step in an old and painful dance.

The first, claws raking down her back from right shoulder blade, was the first blow, the one that had caught her by surprise.

The second, ragged circles on the front of her left shoulder, was where he had dug his claws in and spun her around.

The third, running from left collarbone to sternum, had been meant to crack bone and crush a heart, but by then, she had been ready.

They had fought after that, and she had more scars from that fight, and from other fights, but none of those were quite as deep. All the rest, after that, she had been ready for.

The “I got your mail” starter for thxfasttwin

//Okay, if you’ve been following me for the past week, you may have noticed that I wrote a silly mundane starter based on getting the wrong mail that I am very attached to. I am hereby awarding this starter to my very precious and wonderful 20th follower, thxfasttwin. Here you go:

Cat walked up to the door hesitantly, pushing her sunglasses up her nose before she reached up and knocked. She thought she heard movement inside the apartment. She wasn’t used to the amount of ambient noise in the city yet; at the cabin she could pinpoint which tree a squirrel was climbing, but here it was much harder to filter out the background hum of life.

“Excuse me,” she called out. “I think I got your mail.”

Heartbeat (Starter for im-ai-jarvis)

A man who wasn’t there was sitting on a bench in Central Park. Of course her was there. Cat could see him plain as day. He looked ordinary; blonde-haired, blue-eyed, in a business suit. His heart beat. His chest rose and fell with his breath. But he had no smell.

Most people probably wouldn’t notice, but for Cat, smell was equal to sight, and this man didn’t smell of skin or blood or sweat. But his heart beat.

She had been sitting in the tree for about five minutes longer than he had been sitting on the bench. Life in the city was strange and new and very enjoyable, but sometimes she just had to climb a tree, and Central Park was really the only appropriate place for it. She felt a little bad, spying, but there was no really appropriate way that she could think of to say “hey, by the way, I’m in this tree.”

There was also no polite way to say, “What are you? Because you smell wrong and it fascinates me,” but she really wanted to know.

The wind changed, putting him downwind, and he did smell like something. Metal? Plastic? Compounds she couldn’t recognize. She crept just a little closer, trying to get a better look, and…

There was a crack, and a jolt, and she had just barely enough time to brace herself before she and the branch were no longer in the tree. She looked up sheepishly at the man with the strange smell.

“Hi.”
