The Shape of Water....
So I just got back from seeing the shape of water and while it was a good movie, really good even, I wish someone would have talked about the one scene in the movie that left me with a sour taste in my mouth.
I don't really consider this to be spoiler territory because I don't think it affects the story really, just how I felt about then watching the rest of the film. So in hopes of warning others that might be sensitive to the same issue, here goes.
There is a scene about halfway though when the fishman has been liberated and he wanders off alone and runs into Elisa's friend's pet cat. I'm pretty sure it was even in the trailer. The cat hisses, the fishman hisses back and the trailer moves on. Ha ha, right?
Except in the movie itself the scene only shifts focus for a moment to go check in with the owner of the cat who heard the commotion and comes to investigate. And he walks in on the fishman holding the headless body of the cat, entire face bloody, munching. Fucking munching.
And after fishman runs away the cats body is just left on the ground on the background for like another 30 seconds. "Oh the fishman is just a creature, he didn't know what he was doing." Blah blah blah.
Now. I know I'm rather sensitive to cat death visuals, being a huge cat lover and having somewhat recently witnessed an accident involving a cat, but I guess that's my point. I really wish someone had said something in with all the praise I've seen for the movie. I could have either left to the bathroom before the scene, or simply stayed home and saved my money.
