I mean I do think we should maybe contend with the fact that she grew up experiencing an immense amount of white privilege, and I think unlearning all that was too hard for her and she, like a lot of white people, is enjoying the right-wing cultural shift in that it means she doesn’t have to try anymore. That whole album smacks of high-school bully who’s totally not at all racist or homophobic or anything but it’s just fun to make fun of everyone who isn’t wealthy and white. I'm not really a fan of Maisie's music but this whole thing reeks of label fuckery, and I really feel for her. It's so unfair how artists of all varieties these days are made to be so responsible for generating hype. Like, what even is the point labels and publishers then?

right! so many artists these days talk about having labels hold back their albums or having to hit a certain criteria to be able to release stuff and how they're expected to do full on social media marketing. labels seem to get so much control without having to really put in much promotional work beyond just telling the artist to post more tiktoks 😐

just for fun, are there any artists whose voices you really like but whose music you simply do not and cannot vibe with?

I actually don't love a lot of artists that would be considered "vocalists", I've never really vibed with people who can hit high notes and whistle tones. It becomes too musical theater-y and a bit show offy lol for me personally. Ariana has some songs like that, mariah carey can become that for me too. I feel like they focus so much of having the perfect vocal and not making an "mistakes" that their voices lose all personality and emotion. The only vocalist who I really like so far is Raye, she always has emotion in her voice it's great.

As much as I think people discussing this is ridiculous, it should probably be said that many people seem think she sent this text before filming, and therefore before any alleged harassment took place on set. This is very much not true. The article explicitly says it happened shortly before Blake's lawsuit was announced -- so well after filming and the related harassment.

I do think it's still not good behaviour, but the context is important. Also people need to stop making this about personality and whatever. Blake Lively being obnoxious doesn't mean she wasn't harassed. Justin Baldoni being a victim in one instance doesn't mean he wasn't a perpetrator in this one. Taylor being Taylor doesn't mean this is about her at all. Everyone needs to shut up and touch grass right now.

Sorry can I just say, the funniest thing about the Opalite lyrics to me is that while the message is very clear -- your world was dark before me, I made it so much better, brighter and more colourful -- the imagery doesn't really work. She said in an interview that she chose opalite because it's man-made, and she was trying to say that relationships take work. Okay, fair, but now you're comparing a synthetic glass against a naturally occurring mineral that is often significantly more valuable, and much hardier*. Then there's the fact that "onyx night" is not an uncommon phrase in writing, and it's almost always used to describe a night that is very dark but in a desirable and/or exciting way. If we want to be extra pedantic, we can also point out that onyx isn't always black anyway, there's actually a very wide variety of onyx -- not the technicolour of opals, sure, but still --and black onyx is often streaked or layered with white (it's an agate). And both of these things are pretty surface level readings of the lyrics, which I think just goes to show how much they really don't work even when you somehow excuse the racist undertones (which you shouldn't. racism is very bad and should not be tolerated even in more coherent lyrics). But yeah. It's just funny to me that this is the woman who has repeatedly been lauded as this generations greatest songwriter. She really should to read more. Maybe take some classes. Just get some new ideas in her head.

*Additionally funny because it relates to my previous reading of The Alchemy, where it sounds like she's putting in a lot of effort trying to turn something mundane into gold. If/when they break up whatever swifites are left are going to have a field day looking back and going "oh my god she was secretly trying to tell us she was miserable the whole time".

Yeah, it really is not solid imagery to build a song off of, it's very weak and the closer you look at it, the more it doesn't really have any substance and falls apart... and if that's not a good summary of TLOAS as a whole, idk what is lol.

Yeah, when i googled it, i saw a bunch of side-by-sides of her dress and that dress from the film so while it's not my personal taste, I do appreciate it's uniqueness and the fact it's a reference to something.
