SergeantĀ āRipperā Jackson of the Catachan Veterans. Quite enjoyed this burly maāam, and the return to the Militarum gave me a chance to practice more sedated colours on a Citadel mini and the camo pattern on her pants. Her miniscule features were oddly easy to apply, even her eyeball that I got right on the first pass. I was honestly shocked that I got it right so quickly.
Her heavily decorated base was a treat to detail, along with all the Catachan creepy crawlies that necessitate keeping your long pants tucked into your heavy boots.

Just call them the Imperial Guard!
With the new Guard codex out, I have to say I am incredibly impressed. Not only have the forgotten regiments been reinstated, but I feel that I do not need to bring any allies to bulk up my little force and the infantry swarm will be able to hold its own.
I've not had the chance to actually play with the new codex yet, but even with the Index entries, the Guard were looking strong.
The Good:
The Regiments- all have strong uses and army builds, but what I love most is the diversity between them. The Cadians shoot better, the Catchans fight stronger, the Valhallans have will of steel, Vostroyans shoot further, Armageddon shoot faster, Tallarn move faster, Tempestus shoot more shots and Mordians hold their lines. Each Regiment also gets a unique Relic, Warlord Trait and Order.
Orders- Free to activate (unless a conscript) and are issued from the cheap HQ and Elite choices. Spamming orders is now easier than ever.
GRINDING ADVANCE- The fixed my gripe with the Leman Russ Battle Tanks by making them so much better. If they move less than half their Move value, the turret weapon shoots twice at the same target AND they donāt suffer any penalty for moving and shooting with the turret weapon. My Punisher thanks you Games Workshop.
Stratagems- Just briefly, my favourites are Valhallarn respawning units, Vengeance for Cadia, waves of frag grenades and a Baneblade taking cover.
Ā The Alright:
Characters- I am tempted to pick up a couple of the characters now. Creed gives out 3 orders per turn, Yarrick allows re-roll To Hit of 1 (alongside the normal Commisar abilities, Straken gives out more Attacks in combat, Kell lets a character issue another order and re-roll morale for Cadians, Harker lets Catchans Shoot better. My only wish is that some of the old characters could have come back for the other Regiments.
The Miscellaneous- the Auxillia, telepathica and others that do not use the Regiment Key word do not interrupt the rest of the detachment from using their doctrine. This is good, but Ill be more impressed if this happens with the Imperial Agents book too.
The Bad:
ROUGH RIDERS- I know they don't have models any more. BUT I think bringing the Tallarn back without the Rough Riders is a crime.
Unit differences- what I mean is that there are still some units that are clearly better than others, which for the most part is fine, but when left with the choice of a Special Weapons team or a Command Squad, I will not have a tough decision.
Conclusion:
All together this is going to really shake things up for the Guard. I used to use my Infantry Platoon spam as a joke army, but now I can see them being a real threat to some more elite armies.
