cate-with-a-c i hope u don’t mind me posting this, but it might get a lil long !! lots of plant advice

mmk so ur air plants. air plants, or tillandsia, are a genus of epiphyte bromeliad- meaning they grow on trees & absorb water/nutrients from the air. they shouldn’t be potted in soil, so the ceramic bowls you got them in should be just fine as long as they don’t interfere with water, light, or air circulation! it seems like you’re taking pretty good care of these guys, so i’m just gonna cover everything to try and figure out the problem.

light is probably the most important thing for air plants, so make sure they’re sitting by a sunny window! south facing windows are the brightest in the northern hemisphere, but east or west should also be good. 

if your ceramic bowls are opaque/your plants are sitting at the bottom of them, the light might be getting blocked! this is an easy fix, you can just fill the bowls with pebbles and set your plants on top. 

if you can’t get enough light in your room, you can pick up a full spectrum UVB light at the pet store! it’s not a perfect substitute but it helps

as for water, most sellers actually understate this one! you’ll usually hear that they only need a light misting every once in a while, but that’s not actually the case! air plants need to be thoroughly wet 2-3 times a week, like dripping wet. you can do that by either taking them out of their containers and misting them heavily, or dunking them in water for a few minutes. if you dunk them, keep the base of the plant out of the water to avoid rot.

air plants are pretty susceptible to rot, so make sure they’re never sitting in water! take them out of their containers when you water them, and make sure their containers are free of moss or other water retaining materials. the pebbles i mentioned earlier can also help with this, as any excess water will drip to the bottom of the bowl & away from your plant. your air plants should be able to dry in 4 hours after watering, so always water before night time!

air plants are a type of bromeliad- so they can be a bit picky about water! bromeliads can be sensitive to chlorine and salts in tap water. the very best water is rain water, which you can harvest in a bowl whenever it rains! it’s super healthy for them. you can also set tap water out for 24 hours to evaporate the chlorine, or buy a dechlorinator from the pet store (i use this for all my plants tbh). or you could buy reverse-osmosis filtered bottled water (like aquafina) or any bottled water EXCEPT distilled water. hOWEVER most of these options are overkill & you don’t rlly need to worry about it unless the water is burning your plants, or you’re a total plant snob like me

like the name implies, air plants need good air circulation. plants take in carbon dioxide through the air & they don’t have lungs to pump it in, so the air around them needs to be able to move freely! 

again, filling the bowls with pebbles and setting your plants on top will help them get more air! the sides of containers block air from reaching your plants if they’re too deep inside.

air plants should have enough light/air circulation to dry in 4 hours after watering. it can be helpful to turn a fan on after watering them!

if you want to fertilize your air plants, you can use a bromeliad fertilizer or balanced 20-20-20 fertilizer diluted to 1/4 strength (that’s less than 1/16 tsp per quart for me). water them with the fertilizer solution about once/twice a month from spring-fall if they’re looking sad

i’m not sure what kind of succulent you have, but the care requirements are pretty similar for all of them. i’ll write everything out, but i think your problem is water, so you can just skip straight to that if you want to!

first thing’s first is your housing. succulents can grow in pretty much any container, as long as the container has drainage holes. this is super duper important because without drainage holes, your succulent will either rot from being trapped in too much water or dry up from not getting watered at all.

i have found that pots that are only glazed on the outside will also rot succulents, even if they have huge drainage holes. thanks marrifield garden center.

if your pot is really deep, you can add a layer of pebbles to the bottom to help it drain more quickly, but this isn’t a substitute for drainage holes.

use soil that drains quickly and doesn’t contain too much peat or wood chips. regular potting soil will do just fine as long as you don’t pack it in and your pot isn’t enormous. you can buy cactus soil if you want, or you can mix regular potting soil with washed coarse sand. 

like air plants, succulents like a lot of light. they should also be kept by a bright sunny window and can also use UVB lights. 

if succulents aren’t getting enough light, they’ll start to become etiolated and leggy, with long stems, spaced out leaves, and pale colors. generally, happy succulents are compact and bright green.

if they’re getting too much light or are abruptly exposed to bright sunlight, they will sunburn or crisp up! just move them further from the light if that happens.

i think your main problem is water. succulents love water! they just hate to sit in it. they live in the desert, so they’re designed to take in a lot of water all at once and store it though periods of drought. succulents should be watered only when their soil has had a chance to go bone dry all the way through. this should be about every 5-7 days! and they take a LOT of water- you should pour it in until it comes out the drainage holes!

succulents don’t like to be misted- they don’t absorb water through their leaves! in fact, they have a water repellent coating (called a glaucous coating) that keeps pests away & prevents sunburn, which can be damaged by misting. succulents should only be watered though their roots, and should avoid having their leaves in contact with water.

succulents are VERY susceptible to rot, so never allow their soil to stay moist! it should dry out in about a week. you can check with a toothpick! poke it in close to the edge of the pot, and if it comes out clean/dry, you’re good.

succulents appreciate a consistent watering schedule! i water mine every saturday morning. 

wait a week to water succulents after repotting! it gives their roots time to heal

if you want, you can fertilize your succulents with a balanced 20-20-20 fertilizer, diluted to 1/4 strength. water them with the fertilizer solution once a month from spring-fall. it’s not required tho!

that’s basically all i can think of rn?? i think your succulent should definitely perk up if u water it, and i think your air plants probably will too!

I am lowkey jealous of your gardening skills. I’ve been fighting with my two air plants and my little succulent with no luck. They refuse to do anything but wilt and make me feel guilty
