Happy muzzle Monday!
Imo Catherine makes a lot more sense if you see her as a combination of "I saw my friend get radicalized in his local church and I suspected he was going to become the footsoldier for a reactionary political assassination linked to an earlier decapitation strike/regicide orchestrated by others in the region he came from, so I turned him in to get prosecuted/killed by a third party because that seemed like the least bad option not knowing whether he was actually going to do it, and now I try to not think about it and follow orders unconditionally" + her friendship with Christophe being more than just "we were classmates" and involved some kind of oath, explicitly or implicitly
The latter would explain why she had to take refuge in Garreg Mach; Kingdom is honor culture, oaths are sacred, breaking it is dishonorable, ratting out internal affairs and getting an external party involved is a social death sentence. What she did would have made her a pariah in the Kingdom, even in the east where her family (House Charon) is, even if it was the "right thing" to do, and more importantly with the king gone there wouldn't have been anybody around to protect her from revenge over Christophe by the west. In her A support with Byleth it says she was accused of being involved in regicide and became an outlaw, kinda sounds like that could have been political retaliation amidst the post-Tragedy chaos. At any rate going to Garreg Mach and changing her name was probably the best option just like it was for Gustav/Gilbert.
Catherine being unquestioningly unconditionally loyal to Rhea indicates that she's not well but not in the way a lot of people think. Like she's fucked up because her home country got fucked up. She saw up close how a "good" person could get radicalized/manipulated into taking part in politically destructive projects, and doing something about that required going against everything that the culture she grew up in taught her was "right" and "honorable" and also led to destruction of her social standing/future/etc. Yeah you'd also get psychological issues from that and find a way to not to think about the morality of your actions/decisions from then on. Moral injury leaves one hell of a scar
None of this shit requires Rhea "grooming" or "manipulating" her either, Catherine was 24 when she became a refugee at Garreg Mach. Way more likely that she went "well fuck I became a dishonorable oath-breaker/tattler/outlaw so I can't exactly live by honor/chivalry now and the ultimate authority of my country is dead. What can I use to guide/ground my life that won't make me too haunted by Christophe or the stolen future of myself and my country" (sees Rhea) "Ok the archbishop is also an authority figure" (none of this requires Rhea engaging with her personally/deeply at all)
Tl;dr Catherine more coherent if you read her primarily as a product of the Great Faerghan Political Fallout™ following Tragedy of Duscur, not about Church/Rhea

Submitter's comments:
AC is a great author generally for femslash but this fic specifically looks like it's going to be a lot of fun, both for people who like monsters and those who like femslash. For folks who don't know the characters, Catherine is a hyper-devoted knight for the Church of Seiros's archbishop, Rhea. Catherine's partner is fellow knight, Shamir, who is neither particularly religious nor devoted to Rhea; she's there to repay a debt and then may or may not bounce later, depending on what would be beneficial for her or ensure her survival. Catherine and Shamir both get along and don't; early on in their relationship, Catherine thinks Shamir is unfriendly and Shamir thinks Catherine likes to hear herself talk too much. They do respect each other, though and grow to rely on one another over time. Anyway, AC captures their dynamic SO well and writes in a way that's accessible even to people who aren't fans of the associated media, so if you like monsters and women, this fic is worth checking out. (Check out her other works, too, though!)
fe scuffle attack on @ethereal-will !
Ppl should make felix more fucked up and freaky for having a naturally occurring major crest. Lysethia, edelgard, catherine, and felix and can read each others minds but never figure it out. They start sniffing at each other like dogs getting to know one another but have no idea theyre doing it/think its perfectly acceptable behavior. Lysethia starts growling when felix enters the room. They should all get claws. Maybe edelgards horns on her crown are Real. Rhea and seteth are sweating in their offices like ‘what do be do abt the barely contained dragon energy within 3 mean teenagers and an insane lesbian?’ Meanwhile flayn is showing felix how to hunt fish with his sharp teeth (like a bear)
"You insulted my boss? Die, sinner!"
If anyone tries to tell you the Church of Seiros doesn't execute people for any offense, just remember:
Catherine says she would kill a person just for being mildly disrespectful to Rhea. She's highly respected among the knighthood: they would follow her example.
Okay, but genuinely how is Catherine having two hands not a more common ship?
Like.
Shamir/Rhea is my pet rarepair, Rhea and this sassy Dagdan assassin who openly doesn't give a shit about the church but gets paired up with Rhea's favouritist knight and sent on all the most importantest missions and has the Archbishops implicit trust (the higher ups of the church are tearing their hair out figuring why Rhea let's Shamir do half the stuff she does, Seteth Is Not Paid Enough to stop the jealous rumours of his sisters crush sleeping her way to the top, if Rhea doesn't get more subtle he's going to commit a fratricide)
Shamir quietly moping about Catherine and Rhea having private talks, meanwhile those private talks are a mutual gushing over Shamir's everything (no, neither of them are aware they have a crush)
Post any route where Rhea survives, the three of them fuck off to do canon ending things, and people are just like. "Is that. Is that the fucking archbishop?" "not anymore, I retired :)" "Now, hands up, this is a robbery prick-"
behold, ive fallen back into 3h
