1 November: Solemnity of All Saints Who are the saints? “These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." (Revelation 7: 14 NABRE) The Church celebrates today the Solemnity of All Saints. The Church teaches that these Four Last Things are certain: Death, Judgment, Heaven and Hell. The saints persevered during their life here on earth in following Jesus. Their hands were sinless, their hearts clean; they did not desire what is vain. Everybody can be a saint. Be a saint. That is the best thing.
1 November: Solemnity of All Saints Today is a Holy Day of Obligation. Every Roman Catholic is required to attend Mass to honor all the faithful in heaven and to pray for the departed souls. (Canon 1246) The need and duty of prayer for the departed souls has been acknowledged by the Church at all times. It is recommended in the Scriptures of the Old Testament: "It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins."(2 Macch. 12, 46). This duty has found expression not only in public and private prayers but especially in the offering of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for the repose of souls.
1 October: Memorial of Saint Therese of Lisieux Saint Thérèse of Lisieux Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus was in January 2, 1873 as Marie Françoise-Thérèse Martin. She is popularly known as "The Little Flower of Jesus" or simply "The Little Flower". At 15, she entered the Carmelite convent in Lisieux to give her whole life to God. She took the religious name Sister Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face. Living a hidden, simple life of prayer, she was gifted with great intimacy with God. She lived and taught a spirituality of attending to everyone and everything well and with love. She loved flowers and saw herself as the "little flower of Jesus," who gave glory to God by just being her beautiful little self among all the other flowers in God's garden. Because of this beautiful analogy, the title "little flower" remained with St. Therese. She died on September 30, 1897. She was canonized by Pope Pius XI on May 17, 1925. The same Pope proclaimed her Universal Patron of the Missions, alongside Saint Francis Xavier on December 14, 1927. She has been acclaimed "the greatest saint of modern times." In 1997, during the Eucharistic Celebration of the Twelfth World Youth Day in Paris, Pope John Paul II declared St. Therese a Doctor of the Church - the only Doctor of his pontificate - in tribute to the powerful way her spirituality has influenced people all over the world. Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross The feast was celebrated in Rome before the end of the 7th century. Its purpose is to commemorate the recovering of that portion of the Holy Cross which was preserved at Jerusalem, and which had fallen into the hands of the Persians. Nine years after, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was dedicated in Jerusalem on this day. We honor the Cross of Christ because it was the instrument of our salvation. Through the cross, we have been redeemed. We are no longer slaves but children of God. (In the photo: Holy Sepulchre Church during my Holy Land Pilgrimage in 2015) #Catholic101
