The Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a liturgical feast commemorated on September 14. In some translations, you can also see it called Holy Cross Day or the Triumph of the Cross. The celebration is meant to honor the cross on which Christ was crucified. This is what you can actually see in the featured Palekh icon dated to the mid-19th century. According to the legend, the original cross was once found by St. Helena during her pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
