I have not talked about him enough recently, but here is something I love about John Steed: He's an (ostensibly) straight man who is a feminist.

And I don't mean vaguely supportive of feminism/women—I mean a man who loves women, sees women, and listens to women. Cathy gives him all kinds of shit and here's the thing: he LISTENS TO HER. He hears what she says, and it may occasionally annoy the shit out of him, but he does not discard anything. He knows she's smart. He knows she's capable. He listens to what she says and he applies it, and he rarely (ever?) tries to take credit for it by himself. He tells his superiors that she's an expert and should be listened to.

He works with Emma on a basis of equality. He doesn't underestimate her, he doesn't denigrate her. He desires her, yes, and he loves her, and that doesn't change his understanding of her intelligence or her capability.

Steed is far from perfect, but he's a man who truly wants to do better and is very capable of it because he sees these brilliant women in his life and he recognizes and upholds their brilliance.

6 years and 2 days ago Honor Blackman passed away. Best know as Cathy Gale on ",The Avengers " opposite Patrick Macnee. She was Steeds first female partner on the series. She truly was cool 😎 Cathy Gale. Long Live The Avengers.

I've started watching Call the Midwife again. It's 1963 in Poplar, and I have decided that The Avengers is something that the denizens of Nonnatus House watch on the regular, so my fevered brain concocted this little exchange:

Trixie Franklin: Oh! I just remembered! The Avengers is on tonight! That John Steed is just so dreamy....

Sister Monica Joan: Indeed, he does have a most pleasing visage, but he is something of a libertine, which does not speak well for him. However, he does engage most assiduously in bringing evildoers to justice, so I suppose he may be forgiven his excesses on that account.

Lucille Anderson: And what do you think of Mrs. Gale, Sister Monica Joan? I think she is my favourite.

Sister Monica Joan: Mrs. Gale is a most admirable woman. Although she is a widow who has endured profound hardships, I do not pity her, for she is possessed of a profound intelligence and her physical prowess is unmatched. She really should attend more frequently to the nourishment of her body, though. If she were sitting at table with us tonight, I would serve her a large slice of that gateau we see before us, and encourage her to consume it in its entirety.

Sister Julienne: (has no idea what any of this is about but nods and smiles encouragingly and makes a mental note to lock up any leftover gateau extra securely to prevent nighttime incursions by Sister Monica Joan)
