It saddens me that in our culture, a man who has one marriage and is devoted to his wife is looked upon by some as weird while another man, one who openly admits in his autobiography to compulsive infidelities can be seen as a role model.

Patrick McGoohan was happily married for 58 years. I find that inspiring. Many other actors of his time made their relationships a low priority. One actor I can think of off hand married three times, his sexual predilections leading to divorces. McGoohan was willing to be seen as odd. He didn’t care, and in the end, he lived in a marriage of strength and depth. I find that uplifting.

Resistance to kissing a woman who is not your wife is not being “weirdly scared” of women. It is, in fact, a natural reaction. I wouldn’t want to kiss any man besides my husband and I wouldn’t want a job that forced me to do so. But what if I liked my job? As an actor, there are many roles you can perform that don’t include love scenes and I think McGoohan’s critical accolades would attest to that.
