cathymnk replied to your post“Well, I’m not surprised that Bright Star is closing. Given that it’s...”
I was worried Hamilton would kill it. So sad.
I mean, shows close immediately after the Tony Awards broadcast all the time, so this isn’t a particularly strange year or anything. As for Hamilton culpability, I think this Broadway season is certainly engaged in conversations about diversity and representation. Not only is Hamilton doing amazingly well, but we also have Shuffle Along and The Color Purple--both of which are doing well financially (and critically). But then there’s also School of Rock and She Loves Me, which are performing fantastically and are far more conventional (She Loves Me is a classic and School of Rock is a “safe” bet since it’s based on a film and is a rock musical). I’m not sure what it is about Bright Star that isn’t connecting with potential audiences, but I would guess that it’s because it’s a pretty standard story that, as Steve Martin I think put it, has not even one ounce of irony to it. I’m not sure that’s what people wanted this year. And the fact that Bright Star came up during the Hamilton casting controversry probably didn’t help things. That Bright Star was heralded as the “all white show” seemingly in direct opposition to Hamilton’s multiracial casting, well....that probably didn’t sit well with a lot of folks.
cathymnk replied to your post“Ok so should I see Shuffle Along or The Color Purple?”
Shuffle Along got nominated for an awful lot of Tonys, but I have to admit that I'd be more interested in Color Purple.

I've heard The Color Purple is amazing, but Shuffle Along has Glee alumni in it.

I would say The Color Purple but I've heard amazing things about both.
Yeah, I’m leaning towards The Color Purple. Shuffle Along has an incredible cast and is a good historical show for me to see, but I think The Color Purple might be more enjoyable overall. Plus, I might be able to fit it into the dissertation (this is essentially how I justify my Broadway expenses--because research!). The only thing is the cost. I can get good tickets for $140, which is a little high for my budget these days. Or I can be ok with the last row of the mezzanine for $59. I also don’t want to wait too long to purchase tickets because if Cynthia Erivo wins (and she will) and if the show wins Best Revival (and it will), then ticket prices are likely to go up. Ugh stupid adult responsibilities.
Anyway, thanks for weighing in, friends!

I loved Patty so much in that moment! No hesitation, just start firing at the land shark that Barry told her wasn’t real. She’s so plucky. They’d better tell her Barry’s the Flash soon.
With this show’s history of keeping Barry’s secret I’m kind of surprised she didn’t find out last week. It surely won’t be too long. I am enjoying that girl more and more.
Plus it seems like Iris has bigger things going on than getting a new boyfriend.

I'll be happy with whatever you do, but I keep imagining him storming the castle (bar), ready to fight whoever is trying to steal Hartley away from him! I really want something that romantic (lol) for him.
I can’t say there’s any storming the Rogues bar, but ultimately, after he finally gets his shit together, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed ;)

That arrangement was the best! I'm definitely looking that band up! His penchant for cool arrangements is one of the things that makes him such an interesting musician. He's a rock star at heart. Though that arrangement sounded mostly reggae to me, not punk, except the end.
Agreed! It definitely had a super cool reggae vibe. It was so interesting to have this chill arrangement until the final chorus. I love the juxtaposition of those two things. It made the end very unexpected and super sexy.
His penchance for interesting arrangements is one of my absolute favorite things about him.
Thank you.
