Indoor Cats: Catios
Catios for the Cat Enrichment Masterpost
A catio (cat patio) is a contained space outdoors that allows a cat to experience being “outside” without the threat of being harmed by bigger wildlife, other pets, humans, vehicles, or being exposed to toxic substances or disease (mostly). It also prevents them from killing (most) wildlife, unless it manages to get into the enclosure.
Catios range from very small window units:
And they don’t need to be super expensive or store bought or involve a ton of wood. This person made theirs with a little bit of PVC, some chicken wire, and a piece of carpet.
To more elaborate, expansive enclosures:
Here’s one that apparently expanded little by little, and looks amazing!
I’ve even been told that folks with smaller, fenced backyards have just netted the top with cat or other similarly tough netting and then can safely allow their cat into their entire backyard without fear the cat will wander to get into trouble. With the netting, it’s also difficult for wildlife to get in to where the cat can access and kill them.
If you happen to be someplace where you cannot modify the exterior of your living space or use a window unit, there are still catio-like options that are more temporary or mobile.
For example, cat tents!
Some people have taken creative liberties with tents and tunnels:
There are also slightly sturdier structures, like playpens:
And stand-alone catios that aren’t attached to anything, sort of like a little chicken coop or a kennel that can go outside but still be moved:
All of these options allow your cat to experience a little bit of the outdoors safely. They will be able to feel the sun on their fur, hear all the sounds, see all the sights, and smell all the smells. The bare-bottom ones can also provide lounging time on natural ground, good for lots of rolling in the grass or dirt. All without endangering your cat or wildlife in your area!

Do the cats try to escape or are they pretty chill to be indoors now? What are your thoughts on Catios? If you had the space/time/money would you build one?

Despite having lived outside for the first ~six weeks of their lives, my kitties are now scared of the outside (they're scared of pretty much everything, poor little furballs). They've never tried to escape.
I'm a big fan of Catios and similar constructions. My cousin's kitty loves going out on their balcony to sit in the sun and occasionally bat at insects (they used to have the balcony covered in netting, but now he's arthritic and never jumps):
I'm planning to move later this year, and I'm hoping my new place will enable such a setup! Very excited about the prospect. :D Remains to be seen whether my cats will enjoy it, though... they are all pretty content indoors.
How about you? Thoughts on Catios or other specialized pet enclosures, pet enrichment, etc? (Question aimed at both @amloveabledeathmo and other readers; cute pet pics optional but encouraged as part of reply XD )
These catios are UNREAL.
We spoke to Alan, who told us about why he started building the world’s best catios. Just wait until you see how he themes them!

Toast the bengals owner here! He pretty much has most of the basement to himself (besides my bathroom and bedroom which I keep closed so he doesn't pee in there, he has in my bathroom a few times) since our dog is getting older he doesn't like going down the stairs. This Spring I want to build an outdoor enclosure area/catio to take my cats outside to get them more enrichment/exercise and play with them, I don't trust toast to be on a harness like his sister. Do you have any cool catio ideas? :)
There’s a few posts here! :) http://fantasticbeastsandhowtokeepthem.tumblr.com/tagged/catios I don’t think I have any other links saved currently, but there might also be some more on @amazingpetenclosures too!
This is a surprisingly well-written article about catios, considering the source (always double-check the potential toxicity of plants, though).

Cats and birds both agree that catios are cool! Cats safely get outdoor time, wildlife is out of reach. Check out catiospaces.com to see more.
Catio by Lorraine and Adrian Marshall.
Not only is this an extremely beautiful catio, but these dedicated owners could use some help. Most of these cats were once free-roaming indoor/outdoor cats that they brought in and created this wonderful, enriching space for and now the area they live in is trying to force them to tear it down.
If you're up to it, they could use a few more signatures on their petition.
