Here’s a fun #AnimalFact for #InternationalCheetahDay: The black lines that run from the corner of each eye to the corner of either side of the mouth are sometimes called tear marks or malar marks. The most popular hypothesis about why cheetahs have them involves when the cheetah hunts - day time. More often than not lions, leopards and hyenas will hunt at night and sleep during the day. Cheetahs would rather not have to fight with the bigger predators for food, so it makes sense to hunt during the day. But that means you have to deal with the bright sun. And clearly a hat or sunglasses are not going to stay in place when you are chasing down prey at 70 mph! However, those tear marks can help. It is believed that the black lines absorb the sun and prevent it from causing a glare into the eyes of the cheetah. Pretty handy adaptation for a daytime hunter who hunts in the savannas of Africa. #cheetah #intlcheetahday #cheetahday #wildlifeeducation #animalambassador #sandiegozoo #safaripark #bigcat #bigcatsofinstagram #africa #visitthezoo #wildlifeconservation #zoophotography #instacat #instacats #catogram #notapet #cute #cuteface #spots (at San Diego, California)
