The story I’m about to tell you is not about this cat, who is a very sweet kitten we met tonight in Reykjavik. This story is about another cat in Keflavík, where we were staying last week. I didn’t get a picture of him, but he was awesome. We stayed at a guesthouse in Keflavík that was connected to the garage of a bigger house where the owners lived. The cat lived outside but had a thick coat, and he was aggressively friendly- every time we left the house, he would come greet us and try to follow us wherever we were going. He got in the trash a lot and made a mess in the driveway, and other times he’d hang out on our porch and meow loudly. One night, we were woken up at 3:45AM by a loud beeping alarm sound. We had no idea what it was, so I texted our host and asked him if he could shut it off. A few minutes later, it stopped. We went back to sleep. 20 minutes later, it started going off again. I texted our host again, but didn’t get an answer. The alarm stopped on its own, so we got settled back in bed. Then, there was a police officer at our door, asking me questions in Icelandic. I said hello and he switched to English, asking me if I had permission to be in the house. I showed him my reservation, and told him he could verify it with the owners of the house. He told me the owners weren’t home, but he started talking to someone on the radio, and told me he’d be right back. While he was gone, the host texted me back: “hi, we are so sorry, we are explaining everything to the police now.” The cop knocked on our door again and said, “hello, so sorry to bother you. We talked to the owners and everything is fine. The cat set off the alarm system. Have a good night.” They kept the cat inside after that, and we didn’t see him again. #cats #catsoficeland #iceland #reykjavik #keflavik (at Reykjavík, Iceland)
