Cavendish Beach should be accessable to all
This is something that I've been thinking about for a while. Prince Edward Island is famous for it's beaches. Tourism PEI boasts that we have the warmest water north of the Carolinas, and I believe it. I've stepped into some pretty warm water at some beaches over the years. I love the beach. As a PEI resident, I go as often as I can during the summer months. As a legally blind dialysis patient, I find stairs to be a menace. At a beach, thay are more than that, they are dangerous, especially if they are crowded or slippery with sand. For this reason, I like to go to Brackley Beach, because there is a boardwalk from the parking lot, over the dunes, right to the beach. People ceme from all over the world to see our beaches. The most famous and most frequented would be Cavendish Beach, because of it's proximty to Green Gables, and it's famous fictional resident. However, this beach, as popular as it is, is not accessable. There is accessable parking, but there is no ramp to get over the curb to the entrance to the beach. Once you are an the boardwalk and at the top of the dunes, there is no ramp to take you back down the dunes to the beach, just stairs. Of all the beaches on Prince Edward island, why is this one not accessable? With Green Gables Historic Site and other attractions so close by, it is a haven for visitors. Personally, I think that all beaches in the Prince Edward Island National Park should be made accessable, since they are a part of the Canadian National Park system. Since these parks are owned by all Canadians, all Canadians should be able to enjoy them, regardless of mobility issues. For an Island that promotes it's friendliness and hospitality, I think we are missing an opportunity to also promote inclusion. As proud Islanders, and Canadians, we should be ashamed of this.
