Murder #2
Murder #2 C.C. Studios 2019 Created by Brittany & Matthew Loisel Written by Matthew Loisel Illustrated by Emiliano Correa Flats by Matias Casimiro Lettered by Micah Myers Last time in Murder, The Butcher's Butcher went undercover in an industrial hatchery, gathering intel as chickens begin linking telepathically. In the process he made a rowdy newly hatched avian friend, and trouble loomed as the long-linked cats and dogs position themselves for an uncertain future... Like Celine sang It's all coming back to me now... I love being able to say this, that after reading a first issue and waiting for the second, with crowd-funding books it does take a minute, and you can pick up the new issue and remember what it was about the first one you loved so much that's how you know that there is really strong storytelling going on here. Also I have to admit that the idea behind this series is superb and with this issue we go beyond simply showing the cruelty towards animals in modern farming but it extends beyond that to animal cruelty in general. It's about time that the stance we are seeing can shine a spotlight on something without making it seem political or controversial. The opening here is interesting to say the least. I want to know why Ronnie couldn't keep Bert if they've been instrumental to each other. Also I am kind of disappointed that they didn't keep him at home with the others, I mean I know he's a hamster but really now. I already love Bert. This really does go a long way in keeping with the books values and belief's while delivering one hell of a great interesting and dynamic opening. It makes you want to know and see more and that is exactly what it is supposed to doe. The away that this is being told is sensational. The story & plot development that we see here with how the book is structured and how the reader learns information are extremely well done. The way we see the sequence of events unfold is marvellous and the more we learn the less we seem to know and it's both maddening and exciting beyond belief at the same time. The character development that we see is strong and keeps the characters growing, evolving and learning, and I don't mean just the humans either. With the pacing here we start to see the twists & turns throughout the entire story. I like what we see and I find myself oddly attracted to the suit and to what we see them doing with it. The interiors here are amazing. The linework is strong, sure, crisp and clean and the way that the varying weights are being utilised to create the attention to detail is really rather marvellous. The way that the colours work so well with the linework is no accident and to see the spotlight and how this has been created is utterly sensational. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show an extremely nice eye for storytelling. Also I am utterly impressed by the way we see the wildlife here, regardless of the species the feathers or fur, you name it it's bloody gorgeous! The colours too with how a base a chosen and then to see the hues and tones within it as they create the shading and shadows. With the introduction of a new player and what that represents remains to be seen but I will say this it does certainly add a whole new level of intrigue that I cannot wait to see explored. I mean rivals or enemies is currently unknown but actions taken thus far will not be welcomed if there should be a next meeting. Still the dialogue was friggin hilarious and I hate to say it but Alexis came in hot and didn't let up and this is among the reasons why we have so many cultural problems among each other. People it is for books like this that I share Kickstarter's and why I constantly tell you all to stop by Artist Alley at conventions an see what people are working on, what books they have and all that fine stuff. This is what the future of storytelling looks like and with all the inconsistency at the supposed “Big Two” this is how and where you find the kind of good, strong storytelling you crave.
