Does anyone have any tips about studying for the CPDT-KA? I have my hours(!), and I have some of the suggested books, but as far as studying them to pass the written test, I’m not sure where to start.
Getting all the certifications I need to be a trainer worth going to outside of Petco/Petsmart is going to cost me nearly two-thousand dollars. Fuck.
What does CPDT-KA Mean?
Providing the best trainers for you and your family...CCPDT
In my field of pet services there are not any hard and fast rules as to who can put out their shingle advertising their services as a dog trainer. Sometimes you luck into finding a wonderful trainer who has read everything under the sun, has many years of experience and has a wonderful rapport with the animals. And sometimes you find a “trainer” who taught her own dog to sit so therefore she’s…

I have 77 hours towards my CPDT-KA!
(It’s a dog trainer certification)
I have all 75 assisting hours plus 2 hands on hours. I just need 223 more hands on hours for a total of 300 hours before I can take the exam.
I still have a long way to go, in training hours as well as studying for the exam, but I’m so happy to have hit the first milestone!
Does anyone know anything about IAABC (International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants)?
Or CCPDT (Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers)?
I want to find somewhere to learn and get certified to be a dog trainer. I'm liking IAABC the best so far, because it's cheaper for one :) and it has a lot more information (books to read, seminars to online courses to take in your area, etc). I'm really liking it, but I want to make sure it'll be good for me (or if CCPDT will be better) before I spend money on it.
Anyone know anything about either of them? Or any other certification sight that I missed?
So classes have been canceled/moved till spring. I still get the scholarships, which I appreciate, and I told them I'm absolutely still taking the courses.
I then mentioned how after the classes were done, I wanted to look into if they would be willing to take me on to shadow and assist and then eventually teach training classes at the SPCA.
That was last night.
This morning Jackie came in and told me I'm to start assisting as soon as my schedule permits it. I think there are about 4-5 classes a week for me to start shadowing in, two Weds night, two Sat afternoon, and then a possible Sunday.
Obviously doing all of those would FUCKING KILL ME, and make work kind of hard to do in the meantime, so I'll be telling Jackie that the moment I can get the days off for Saturdays, I'll start shadowing those. I'll look at the Weds night ones for now and make a decision once I see how doing the other two classes works out on exhaustion/stress factors.
I also need to contact the guy that teaches Sunday classes, because he teaches Agility and I'd have to see if he'd be willing to take me on as shadowing for that. Jackie made it clear she wants me to do that class, so hopefully that'll help me getting considered :3
CLASS STARTS TOMORROW
