I haven't read the book, but I watched the first season of Handmaid's Tale and that was all I could handle. It's well-made, but the beginning of s2 is so traumatic and upsetting, I just couldn't do it anymore.

honestly I'm sort of questioning how they could have made two seasons. I'm guessing they're going to try and show the downfall of gilead, which does sound exciting, but lol. I just reaaally don't want to have to see more lesbians die or be tortured ;_; I'll see how I go with this season first though

I literally HATE the guilt-tripping "it is your responsibility to say something as a global citizen" and "why don't you talk about this all the time and not just when it's in the news." I'm not an activist, and most people who follow current events talk about things that are, you know, topical and in the news. That's normal.

Yes! I think a lot of people would avoid getting egg on their faces if they waited like 2 minutes before they posted! Look back on what you wrote!

Also, I'm not an elected official, I have opinions on the issues of our day but I'm not like a bastion of power in our society and I'm very cognizant of that.

Just wondering, what are your go-to sources for political news?

For a general overview, I look at the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and Associated Press. I also look at The Bulwark, Politico, The Hill, Axios, as well as The National Review if I want to see what conservatives are saying.

I also read The New Yorker, NYMag, and several political substacks including Matt Yglesias' Slow-Boring, The Liberal Patriot, Ben Dreyfuss' Calm Down, Dan Pfeiffer's The Message Box, Noah Smith's Noahpinion, and whatever else catches my eye.

Generally, I get a lot of my news from Twitter so keep your eyes out for whatever crosses your timeline, and make sure to read divergent perspectives and be aware of left and right-wing biases!

Please tell me there's a silver lining here. Like, the Republicans have seriously overstepped and underestimated how much women, even conservative women, value reproductive rights? And therefore they lose so badly in the midterms that the Dems can pass a federal law?

One silver lining is that this leaked early which means we have another month to organize. I know Republicans, I've been texting them demanding answers and they're FURIOUS that this leaked so this isn't one of them, it's probably a liberal clerk and she (I'm assuming it's a woman until told otherwise) basically sacrificed her entire career to buy us more time. There's no way a man with that kind of professional trajectory would throw it all way for the women of America. It reminds me of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford in that she showed more patriotism than every Republican combined.

I think there a lot of swingy moderate women, especially in swing states (Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia, Pennsylvania) that mostly have trigger abortion repeal laws, who this might sway into voting Democrat since gun-to-head, they don't want Roe repealed. They probably regarded Roe as settled since even as late as November 2021 during the Virginia election, people clearly didn't believe Roe would be overturned and voted for a Republican trifecta. I can see this decision saving the Blue Wall governors (Gretchen Whitmer, Tony Evers, and Josh Shapiro) and possibly dragging Katie Hobbs and Stacey Abrams over the finish line in Arizona and Georgia but I don't think there's much hope in red states. I hope against hope that Beto O'Rourke can win against Abbott since Texas also has a trigger law in effect but that's definitely going to be a massive uphill slog since Biden lost Texas by 600k votes and Abbott is a popular incumbent governor.

That being said, there aren't rape and incest exceptions for a lot of those trigger laws, and there's a reason that even Mitch McConnell and co. aren't talking about the content of the leak but simply the leak itself. They know they're on the losing side of criminalizing all abortion even if it goes from 65% people go from supporting abortion remaining legal in the first trimester to 70% of people wanting it illegal in the second trimester. That's why I'm a bit more hopeful than many others that this could save some vulnerable Dems although I doubt it'll help us keep the House. I do think we have a 50/50 chance of keeping the Senate though, which is something.

But we'll see, I'll probably be in front of the Supreme Court with my friends when Dobbs drops so if you want to join me, bring snacks and water because late-June/early-July in DC will be a nightmare in more ways than just this one.

Omg you reminded me of how this local radio DJ (it was 100.7 the bay in Baltimore) was talking about Billie Joe Armstrong renouncing his citizenship over Roe v. Wade last week. She said "good riddance" because she doesn't like when celebrities get political and started going off about how patriotic she is with the 4th of July coming up. I could not believe the audacity!!! This is a very popular band known for decades as being vocal in politics and you're going to say "good riddance"?

I'm not sure what renouncing citizenship even does since we have to vote the crazies out of power and you can't vote without being a citizen but imagine the audacity of pretending to be patriotic without standing up for the half the population that's losing their bodily autonomy.

Also, do you think this DJ knows that Green Day did a music video that explicitly portrayed the military as saints? Lol. Like, this isn't some online edgelording, it's the very reasonable logic of, "When people are suffering and can't take care of themselves, the government should take care them and not wage an unnecessary war!"

One of my older Twitter mutuals told me that Bush never even visited New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina! He just flew over and released this photo of him looking down at the carnage. It's no wonder that Bush's approval ratings were in the toilet after Katrina, like to use Rep. Elissa Slotkin's excellent and appropriate turn of phrase, it was a dereliction of duty.

thank you for speaking up for us even though you have very little to gain, and you know you’ll be treated like that for it. like, I know in the grand scheme of things, sexual harassment and violence against white women being treated as deserved/a myth harms you too because that’s just excusing/denying sexism altogether. but on an interpersonal level it would probably actively benefit you not to say anything on our behalf at all but you still do so. you empathize with other women so earnestly. just thank you for that and i’m so sorry that ppl are so mean to you for it.

I think these asks were in the context of me saying that while white women can be racist to women of color, women of color can also be misogynistic to white women, which is highly counterproductive to bring about liberty and justice for all.

There's a whole bunch of people hate hypothetical wealthy white women who can like idk, travel to get illegal abortions when Roe v. Wade is overturned (since there are so many independently wealthy white women whose money doesn't come from their fathers or husbands amirite?) more than they hate real white men who are oppressing all women on a daily basis. Like in very simplistic and generalized terms, they hate white women for theoretically thinking mean thoughts more than they do white men for DOING mean things.

White women can absolutely be racist to women of color and I'm not excusing that since I've been victimized by it before, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend that WOC criticizing white women is always in good faith because it's not! Whenever I see WOC claim that being cruel to white women about their appearances or whatever is anti-racism, I'm like, you aren't doing anything for feminism or social justice by calling Meghan McCain or Sarah Huckabee Sanders fat and ugly with bad hair, you're just being a misogynist. Criticize their harmful views, of which they have many!

I also sometimes think about how Morgan Jerkins wrote about how she got off to white women being brutally raped in porn and I felt so terrible like imagine caring that little about your fellow human beings. Just horrifying. And, Morgan wasn't even young when she published that, not that youth would be an excuse, she was about my age and that's just ... bleak, you know? Peak no hope for women hours.

Anyways, thank you guys, and here's hoping that things eventually get better for us all.
